Abstract Friction stir welding (FSW) is a novel welding method that is garnering attention, in part, due to its ability to join dissimilar materials. One of the challenges in producing dissimilar friction welded joints is ensuring the welds are defect-free. Nondestructive testing (NDT) methods such as ultrasonic waves, gamma rays, X-rays, and X-ray CT, are gaining popularity as a method to detect internal defects in FSW joints. In this study, dissimilar AA1050-AA6061-T6 FSW lap welds are Manufactured and then examined using an NDT X-ray CT technique. The effects of two critical X-ray CT scanning parameters (voxel size and Hounsfield unit (HU)) on the detection of internal defects are investigated. The samples are scanned via X-ray CT at two different voxel sizes (2.457 E−02 and 1.420 E−03 mm3) and two HU ranges (12-bit and 16-bit depth). The generated Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images are segmented based on a proper HU threshold found via the Otsu thresholding method. The findings show that Small voxel size (higher resolution) improves the ability of detecting internal defects and improves the effectiveness of the thresholding process. Higher HU range results in a wider separation between detected material peaks, thus enhancing the effectiveness of the thresholding process as well.

AbstractIn this paper, the effect of computed tomography (CT) values of metals in 12-bit and 16-bit extended Hounsfield Unit (EHU) scale on dose calculations in radiotherapy treatment planning systems (TPS) were quantified. Dose simulations for metals in water environment were performed with the software PRIMO in 6MV photon mode. The depth dose profiles were analysed and the relative dose differences between the metals determined with 12-bit and 16-bit CT imaging, respectively, were calculated. Maximum dose differences of ΔAl = 3.0%, ΔTi = 4.5%, ΔCr = 6.2% and ΔCu = 11.6% were measured. In order to increase the accuracy of dose calculation on patients with implants, CT imaging in the EHU scale is recommended.

Abstract Computed tomography (CT) was used to compare the tissue structures involved in sound production and reception in a fetus and its maternal body of a female finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaorientalis sunameri) found stranded at Huian, Fujian Province, China, in April 2014. Qualitative assessment of the CT images revealed the physical development of main acoustic tissues including melon, blubber, mandibular fat, muscle, and connective tissue in a 10-month old fetus. Compared to the maternal body, the cranium of the fetus was not enclosed, air sacs and nasal meatus were both absent, and the maxilla was much thinner. Furthermore, Hounsfield unit (HU) measurements from CT scanning were used to quantify the difference between the fetus and its maternal body for melon, blubber, mandibular fat, muscle, and connective tissue. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences in HU between all 5 structures melon, blubber, mandibular fat, muscle, and connective tissue (P < 0.001) both in the fetus and maternal body. The median HU values of melon, blubber, mandibular fat, and muscle in the fetus (−61.0, −74.0, −24.0, and 25.0, respectively) were higher than those recorded in the maternal body (−85.0, −85.0, −69.0, and 12.0, respectively). However, the median HU value of connective tissue (50.0) in the fetus was lower than that recorded in the maternal body (60.0). The results show that the acoustic tissue structures were not fully developed in the fetus and depending on the actual age of the fetus the structures may not be fully formed by the time of birth. Further studies are needed to determine at what age finless porpoise calves have fully developed the tissue structures needed to produce and use ultrasound beams for echolocation.

Object. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a high-porosity hydroxyapatite (HA) spacer in cervical laminoplasty. Bone—spacer bonding rates, complications associated with the implant, and factors related to bone bonding were examined. Methods. The authors evaluated 33 consecutive patients with cervical myelopathy who underwent high-porosity HA spacer—assisted laminoplasty and were followed for at least 1 year (mean 30 months). The results of bone—spacer bonding of the 147 implants were evaluated using computerized tomography (CT) scanning. The symptoms significantly improved in 30 patients. No difference in results was detected between patients with cervical spondylosis and those with ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament. Breakage of seven spacers occurred in four patients without causing neck pain or neurological deficits. There were no other HA spacer—related complications. The spacers became rigidly bound to bone in 61% of the cases, and bone regrowth developed around the spacer in 91%. The rate of bone—spacer bonding increased over time, and the CT-documented attenuation value (Hounsfield unit) of the spacer adjacent to the bone—spacer junction in the group in which union occurred was significantly higher than in the nonunion group. Conclusions. High-porosity HA spacer—augmented laminoplasty produced good bonding-related results. Bone bonding continued to progress 1 year after surgery, indicating the good osteoconductive capability of high-porosity HA. To avoid breakage of a spacer, a minimum 7-mm distance between spacers is necessary.
