The size of the orbits or similar vertices of a network provides important information regarding each individual component of the network. In this paper, we investigate the entropy or information content and the symmetry index for several classes of graphs and compare the values of this measure with that of the symmetry index of certain graphs.

AbstractOne of the arguments against an increased use of repair is that, due to the constantly growing progress, an often already outdated component would be restored. However, refurbishment also allows a component to be modified in order to upgrade it to the state of the art or to adapt it to changed requirements. Many existing approaches regarding Design for Upgradeability are based on a modular product architecture. In these approaches, however, only the upgradeability of a product is considered through the exchange of components. Nevertheless, the exchange and improvement of individual component regions within a refurbishment has already been successfully carried out using additive processes. In this paper, a general method is presented to support the reengineering process, which is necessary to refurbish and upgrade a damaged component. In order to identify which areas can be replaced in the closed system of a component, the systematics of the modular product architecture are used. This allows dependencies between functions and component regions to be identified. Thus, it possible to determine which functions can be integrated into the intended component.

Reproduction and ewe productivity are complex composite traits that are influenced by several component traits. Genetic improvement by selection for an individual component trait may not always be advantageous because adverse or neutral genetic relationships can exist among the component traits. Selection for an overall composite trait of ewe productivity, defined as litter weight weaned per ewe joined, can result in a balanced biological composite trait with favourable responses in component traits including fertility, number of lambs born, lamb survival, lactation and lamb growth. Selection for litter weight weaned may also overcome adverse genetic relationships among reproductive component traits. This review examines the genetic responses of selecting directly for litter weight weaned, compared with selection responses for one or more of its component traits. It is concluded that selection to improve reproductive efficiency and ewe productivity, under most production and environmental systems, would benefit from selection for a composite trait such as litter weight weaned, rather than for a single component trait.

Abstract Fatigue decreases performance in several professional activities. Fatigue can lead to commit technical mistakes which consequences might be lethal, such as in health area, where a surgical error due to the absence of rest can provoke the patient death. Therefore, this study aims to detect vigil and fatigue (due to lack of sleep) states in medical students through the classification of electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns. The EEG signals of 18 physician students were analyzed within theta band (4 - 8 Hz) over front-central recording sites, and alpha band (8 - 13 Hz) rhythms over temporal and parieto-occipital recording sites during the execution of laparoscopic tasks before and after their medical duties. The EEG signal processing pipeline consisted in pre-processing based on individual component analysis, absolute band power estimates, and Support Vector Machine classification. The F-score to differ between vigil and fatigue states was 90.89%, where the first class was slightly more identifiable reaching a sensitivity of 90.18%. Based on this outcome, the detection of fatigue in medical students while their laparoscopic training seems achievable and feasible to diminish technical mistakes that could be lethal in health area. For this purpose, EEG recording are provided.

Abstract An extensive investigation surrounding a performance shortfall of a pipeline compressor is presented. Regions of high aerodynamic loss are identified from an extensive flange-to-flange numerical investigation. Special attention is placed on understanding the impact of the interface model between the rotating and stationary components on the performance of each individual component and the whole machine. This process lead to the redesign of the radial inlet, the diffuser region, and the volute. Upon numerical validation of the proposed design changes, the components were manufactured and installed into the compressor that was already operating in the field. “Field” testing showed the new design to have a peak efficiency improvement of 4 points surpassing the contract guarantee.

Background: Partial nephrectomy became more preferred option in the treatment of localized small renal tumours due to recent advances in imaging modalities and surgical techniques. Renal scoring systems are known to compliment urologist in aiding surgical decision process on extent of surgery in small localized renal tumours. There are few scoring systems described in the literature with their own limitations. Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients with localized renal cell tumours who underwent nephrectomy at Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad fromJanuary 2017 to January 2019. Patients with advanced renal cell cancer disease at presentation were excluded. Total RENAL nephrometry Score (RNS), its individual component scores and complexity category were calculated based on CT report. The study cases were categorized into Group A (Partial Nephrectomy) and as Group B (Radical Nephrectomy). Mean and standard deviation value of the RENAL nephrometry scores and its component scores were calculated for each group. Statistical signicance was calculated using unpaired T-test, using SPSS statistics 21.0 software. Results: The mean age for all patients included in this study is 52.1 years. Out of 80 patients, 32 patients had partial nephrectomy (Group A) and 48 patients had radical nephrectomy (Group B). Based on RENAL nephrometry score complexity, Group A and Group B were further categorized into low, intermediate and high complexity score categories. The total RENAL score, individual component scores and RENAL score complexity were found to be signicantly different between the two group in addition to the tumor size. No statistical signicance was found between the two groups for age and type of tumour on histopathology (benign or malignant). Conclusion: We conclude that preoperative RENAL nephrometry scoring is a useful aid to surgeons to classify the renal tumour complexity before deciding on effective surgical strategy for better patient outcomes

Responses of a visual neuron to optimally oriented stimuli can be suppressed by a superposition of another grating with a different orientation. This effect is known as cross-orientation suppression. However, it is still not clear whether the effect is intracortical in origin or a reflection of subcortical processes. To address this issue, we measured spatiotemporal responses to a plaid pattern, a superposition of two gratings, as well as to individual component gratings (optimal and mask) using a subspace reverse-correlation method. Suppression for the plaid was evaluated by comparing the response to that for the optimal grating. For component stimuli, excitatory and negative responses were defined as responses more positive and negative, respectively, than that to a blank stimulus. The suppressive effect for plaids was observed in the vast majority of neurons. However, only ∼30% of neurons showed the negative response to mask-only gratings. The magnitudes of negative responses to mask-only stimuli were correlated with the degree of suppression for plaid stimuli. Comparing the latencies, we found that the suppression for the plaids starts at about the same time or slightly later than the response onset for the optimal grating and reaches its maximum at about the same time as the peak latency for the mask-only grating. Based on these results, we propose that in addition to the suppressive effect originating at the subcortical stage, delayed suppressive signals derived from the intracortical networks act on the neuron to generate cross-orientation suppression.
