We report our development of terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade lasers with record performance. Using those high-power lasers as the illumination sources and a focal-plane array camera, we are able to perform real-time THz imaging at video rate.

In order to realizing real-time on-line oil monitoring for high-power gearbox’s wear state during operation, a monitoring system is developed on the basis of the ferrograph sensors in this paper. By means of a multi-level monitoring system, a real-time remote monitoring and analysis system of unattended machine wear condition is achieved which can real-time display the image of the wear particles and the wear information of the gears, thus getting such advantages as timely notice and warning, reducing equipment’s damage and maintenance costs . The initial application of system on the real machine shows good results and effects.

This paper gives the results of the investigations of four types of apodized (soft) apertures for beam shaping of UV, visible and IR high-power lasers with near-Gaussian and flat-top transmittance. The apodized apertures (AA) are ≈3–45 mm in diameter, but the principles of fabrication of such apertures lends the possibility of apodizing beams with diameter <1 mm and >200 mm. The examples of studies of the AA in high-power lasers are presented. The possibility of avoiding the Fresnel diffraction ripples is proved experimentally.

ABSTRACTThe surface heat treatment of iron alloys using high power lasers is reported. The essential features e.g. epitaxial growth, homogeneity etc. are discussed. The results are tabulated for the technically important alloys. The possibilities of laser hardening are demonstrated by four examples.
