Mechanisms of the overlapping of gaps due to a refractive index difference minimum and Anderson localization for photonic band gap (PBG) have been used and they give a refractive index contrast difference of less than two percent for X-, L-, and W-points of the Brillouin zone for the pseudogap. Another physical process for the existence of PBG is the use of scattering strength (ε r ≥ 1) for fcc lattice structure. We have found refractive index contrast in the range 2.41–14.21 for the existence of the complete photonic band gap for bound photons (ε r ≥ 1). The lowest limit to yield a gap is 2.41 for valence photons (ε r = 1) at volume filling fraction 85.5% for spherical air atoms and at 14.5% for dielectric spheres. This work is reported for the first time and it is useful for maintaining connectivity and for easier fabrication of photonic crystals.

The optical transmission spectra proprieties of the one-dimensional quasi-periodic multilayered photonic structures according to the Rudin-Shapiro distribution are studied theoretically in this paper by using a theoretical model based on the transfer matrix approach for normal incidence geometry. The influence of the layer number has been studied, i.e. the iteration order of the generating sequence of the quasi-periodic structure on the structure spectral behavior and the width of the Photonic Band Gap (PBG). It was found that the width of the PBG is proportional to the index contrast.

We show that slightly polydisperse disordered 2D foams can be used as a self-assembled template for isotropic photonic band gap (PBG) materials for transverse electric (TE) polarization. Calculations based on in-house experimental and simulated foam structures demonstrate that, at sufficient refractive index contrast, a dry foam organization with threefold nodes and long slender Plateau borders is especially advantageous to open a large PBG. A transition from dry to wet foam structure rapidly closes the PBG mainly by formation of bigger fourfold nodes, filling the PBG with defect modes. By tuning the foam area fraction, we find an optimal quantity of dielectric material, which maximizes the PBG in experimental systems. The obtained results have a potential to be extended to 3D foams to produce a next generation of self-assembled disordered PBG materials, enabling fabrication of cheap and scalable photonic devices.

ABSTRACTLight propagation in a low index core (e.g. SiO2) is realized by a Photonic Band Gap (PBG) cladding waveguide structure with large dielectric index contrast layers (Si/Si3N4). The waveguide is fabricated with a CMOS compatible process. The measured loss for the asymmetric PBG cladding waveguide is about 0.5dB/cm for both polarizations at a wavelength of 1550nm. Potential applications include optical amplification when the SiO2 core is doped with optical active materials (e.g. Er).
