We introduce an all-fiber sensor capable of simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index (RI). The sensor system consists of a single mode fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) structure which serves as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), and the multimode fiber (MMF) is etched by hydrofluoric acid solution. The experimental results demonstrate that the temperature sensitivities of FBG and MZI are 0.016nm/°C and 0.093nm/°C, respectively, and the RI sensitivity of MZI achieves 226.25nm/RIU. The interesting properties of the sensor include compact size, high sensitivity and good operation linearity.

In this paper, an optical fiber composite Fabry-Perot interferometric (CFPI) sensor capable of simultaneous measurement of high temperature and strain is presented. The CFPI sensor consists of a silica-cavity intrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer (IFPI) cascading an air-cavity extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer (EFPI). The IFPI is constructed at the end of the transmission single-mode fiber (SMF) by splicing a short piece of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) to SMF and then the IFPI is inserted into a quartz capillary with a reflective surface to form a single-ended sliding EFPI. In such a configuration, the IFPI is only sensitive to temperature and the EFPI is sensitive to strain, which allows the achieving of temperature-compensated strain measurement. The experimental results show that the proposed sensor has good high-temperature resistance up to 1000 °C. Strain measurement under high temperatures is demonstrated for high-temperature suitability and stable strain response. Featuring intrinsic safety, compact structure and small size, the proposed CFPI sensor may find important applications in the high-temperature harsh environment.

This study proposes and experimentally demonstrates a NOA61-polymer fiber Fizeau interferometer (PFFI) connected to a flexible NOA65-polymer taper (PT) for simultaneous measurement of tilt angle and temperature (T). The PT/PFFI fiber sensor consists of a taper-shaped flexible NOA65 polymer and single-mode fiber with an endface that is attached to a NOA61-polymer. The NOA61-polymer of PFFI is highly sensitive to variations of T with high repeatability and enables the simultaneous measurement of tilt angle by connecting with the highly flexible NOA65-PT. the interference fringe visibility of optical spectra in the PFFI can be highly controlled by the tilt angle of the PT and is thus capable of measuring tilt angles with high sensitivity. On the other hand, wavelength shifts of the spectra in the PFFI only occur when T varies. The proposed PT/PFFI can simultaneously detect the tilt state and the variation of surrounding T by measuring the optical spectral responses and eliminating cross sensitivity. Experimental results demonstrate the PT/PFFI can simultaneously measure tilt angles and T with good sensitivities and obtain averages of 0.4 dB/° and 0.17 nm/°C, respectively.

AbstractThis paper describes the results of extensive performance and reliability characterization of a silicon-based surface micro-machined tunable optical filter. The device comprises a high-finesse Fabry-Perot etalon with one flat and one curved dielectric mirror. The curved mirror is mounted on an electrostatically actuated silicon nitride membrane tethered to the substrate using silicon nitride posts. A voltage applied to the membrane allows the device to be tuned by adjusting the length of the cavity. The device is coupled optically to an input and an output single mode fiber inside a hermetic package. Extensive performance characterization (over operating temperature range) was performed on the packaged device. Parameters characterized included tuning characteristics, insertion loss, filter line-width and side mode suppression ratio. Reliability testing was performed by subjecting the MEMS structure to a very large number of actuations at an elevated temperature both inside the package and on a test board. The MEMS structure was found to be extremely robust, running trillions of actuations without failures. Package level reliability testing conforming to Telcordia standards indicated that key device parameters including insertion loss, filter line-width and tuning characteristics did not change measurably over the duration of the test.
