Phase-shifting technique is an effect way to suppress the zero order diffraction and the conjugate term in digital holography. However the phase-shifting error will influence inevitably the evaluation precision in practice operation. In this paper, the deformation evaluation errors by means of two kinds of four-step phase-shifting algorithms, which are in common use in digital holography, are analyzed and compared by computer simulation. In addition, the phase-shifting errors may cumulate or not according to different phase-shifting techniques, and both cases are considered in this paper. The results based on the digital in-line holography show that the two four-step phase-shifting algorithms possess different sensitivity to the phase-shifting errors, and the preferable one, which is more immune to the phase-shifting errors, is educed in conclusion.

For incoherent and coherent digital holography, the parallel phase-shifting technique has been used to reduce the number of exposures required for the phase-shifting technique which eliminates zero-order diffraction and conjugates image components. Although the parallel phase-shifting technique can decrease the hologram recording time, the image interpolations require additional calculation time. In this study, we propose a technique that reduces the calculation time for image interpolations; this technique is based on the convolution theorem. We experimentally verified the proposed technique and compared it with the conventional technique. The proposed technique is more effective for more precise interpolation algorithms because the calculation time does not depend on the size of interpolation kernels.

In digital holography, errors of the reference field degrade the quality of the reconstructed object field. In this paper, we propose an effective method in phase-shifting digital holography in which the reference field does not need to be known and perfect. The unknown complex amplitudes of both reference and object fields are derived simultaneously. The method employs only five digital holograms and a single execution of a phase retrieval algorithm. So, the required measurements and algorithm executions in this method are fewer than those in other methods; it suggests a simpler and faster method. The effectiveness of the suggested method is indicated by simulation, under noise-free and noisy conditions. Moreover, the capability of the method to extract full information about the phase singularities in both fields is demonstrated.
