Abstract The interaction effect of the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a thin-film absorbing coating deposited on a surface of a fiber cladding on the optical transmission of the PCF is studied. It is shown that the transmission has a quasi-periodic spectrum that is determined either by a resonance coupling between the leaky fundamental PCF mode and leaky modes of the coating, or between the leaky fundamental PCF mode and cladding modes localized between PCF air channels and the coating. Examples are presented of using this effect for fiber-optic sensors of refractive index, pressure, and for sensing an adsorption layer of ammonia molecules deposited on a coating surface contacting with air.

A design of multichannel transmission filter at microwave is proposed. It is based on the use of the finite plasma photonic crystal operating at frequency below the plasma frequency. We consider a design structures of (AB)qA, where A is the dielectric material, B is the plasma layer, and q is the number of periods. It is found that the number of channels is equal to q-1. We show that the locations such multiple channels are in the pass band of the infinite plasma-dielectric photonic crystal. The idea of such design is thus to engineer the photonic pass band, which is fundamentally different from the usual design by engineering the photonic stop band like the multilayer Fabry-Perot transmission filter. The physical mechanism of multiple channels is also discussed.

A two dimensional square lattice photonic crystal (PhC) formed by placing glass matrix in air is proposed for subwavelength imaging around 840 nm. The superlensing behavior at relatively lower wavelength compared to other reported PhC superlens is obtained by this configuration. Other advantages of using glass is that they have lower optical absorption at this wavelength and is relatively cheap. By placing the proposed PhC arrangement between the object and the objective of a conventional optical microscope, superlensing effect can be realized. Moreover, any change in radius of glass rod during fabrication process can result in the shift of superlensing wavelength.
