Abstract Efficient spectral narrowing and accurately reproducible tuning of a dye laser has been achieved by the combination of a low-loss narrow-band interference filter and a solid-quartz-plate-Fabry-Perot-etalon. Bandwidths as small as 5-10-3 Å were obtained by this simple system increasing the spectral density by a factor of at least 2 · 103.

The Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS) combines deep multicolor imaging in broad and narrow band filters with deep probing in several selected wavelength intervals through a Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer with a spectral resolution of ∼450.

We have constructed solid Fabry-Pérot narrow-band filters that can be used in systems having one arc second or better resolution. Our filters operate at Hα, have a three-inch aperture, and typical transmission of 70%. However, the same technology can be applied to construction of filters as narrow as 0.05 Å at any wavelength from 4200 to 11000 Å.
