The article presents the results of a study of use thermographic non-destructive testing to search for cracks in steel structures. Theoretical substantiation of thermal non-destructive method of control for detection of cracks in steel structures. A practical study proving the possibility of using thermal non-destructive testing to detect cracks in steel structures is described. The problems that arise during the thermal non-destructive method of control and possible ways to solve them. The authors conclude that the method of thermographic control can be used during the inspection of steel structures for qualitative assessment of cracks.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to review recent research on the applications of existing non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, especially radio frequency (RF) NDT, for carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) composites. Electromagnetic properties of CFRP composites that are associated with RF NDT are discussed first. The anisotropic characteristic of the conductivity and the relationship between the penetration depth and conductivity should be paid much attention. Then, the well-established RF NDT including eddy current technique, microwave technique and RF-based thermography are well categorised into four types (i.e. electromagnetic induction, resonance, RF-based thermography and RF wave propagation) and demonstrated in detail. The example of impact damage detection using the induction and resonance methods is given. Some discussions on the development (like industrial-scale automated scanning, three-dimensional imaging, short-range ultra-wideband (UWB) imaging and the radio frequency identification technology (RFID)-based NDT) are presented.

Infrared (IR) thermography is a method for imaging thermal fields on the target surfaces in real time. It is a noncontact and non-destructive method of obtaining thermogram of tested material surface or inside of it. We can divide the IR thermographic testing methods into two basic groups – passive and active thermography. This article introduces a basic overview of IR active thermography.

This study explores the potential application of the wavelet analysis to the assessment of the working condition of compact ropes (qualitative assessment). The assessment procedure is a key aspect in the decision- making during the non-destructive testing. This is the first study on diagnostics of the new-design ropes, summarising the results of the analysis of signals from novel compact ropes, based on the defect models. Selection of the wavelet type and of the decomposition detail is a key element of the diagnostic procedure. A major step in the assessment procedure involves the replicas of the rope’s surface. The data provided in this paper will be useful in developing new specialist equipment for magnetic inspection of compact ropes.
