The theoretical description of a simplified end-to-end software tool for simulation of data produced by optical instruments, starting from either synthetic or airborne hyperspectral data, is described and some simulation examples of hyperspectral and panchromatic images for existing and future design instruments are also reported. High spatial/spectral resolution images with low intrinsic noise and the sensor/mission specifications are used as inputs for the simulations. The examples reported in this paper show the capabilities of the tool for simulating target detection scenarios, data quality assessment with respect to classification performance and class discrimination, impact of optical design on image quality, and 3D modelling of optical performances. The simulator is conceived as a tool (during phase 0/A) for the specification and early development of new Earth observation optical instruments, whose compliance to user’s requirements is achieved through a process of cost/performance trade-off. The Selex Galileo simulator, as compared with other existing image simulators for phase C/D projects of space-borne instruments, implements all modules necessary for a complete panchromatic and hyper spectral image simulation, and it allows excellent flexibility and expandability for new integrated functions because of the adopted IDL-ENVI software environment.

Abstract An improved Offner imaging spectrometer was proposed based on the optical system characteristics of Offner imaging spectrometer, which can ensure perfect imaging quality in a wider annular region. The operating wavelength of the improved Offner imaging spectrometer ranges from 900nm to 1700nm, and the magnification is 1. Improved Offner imaging spectrometer can be obtained by changing the meniscus lens position and further optimizing the design. The results indicate that the improved Offner imaging spectrometer can effectively improve compactness and lightweight, and reduce the difficulty of optical adjustment, which is conducive to the stability of practical application.

Abstract Based on the optical system characteristics of coded aperture snapshot spectral imager (CASSI), an optimized optical system of shortwave infrared dual camera CASSI was designed based on improved Offner-Wynne imaging spectrometer. The operating wavelength of the optical system ranges from 900nm to 1700nm, and the focal length is 1200mm. It consists of two parts: the two dimensional imaging system and the multispectral CASSI imaging system. The key technical parameters of the two parts are the same and there is no visual axis difference. Therefore, the optimized optical system can effectively improve real-time performance, optical transmittance and compactness of the dual camera shortwave infrared CASSI, which is conducive to the application in optical measurement scenes in the shooting range.

Interferometry is a very important method in high accuracy measurement for optical system. This article briefly introduced the conception of interferometry and took a product of 4D Technology as an example to carry on the measurement. A large-scale optic-electrical Theodolite in assemblage was measured, and its primary mirror was 400mm in diameter. With the analysis of the results, some micro adjustments of the mechanical structure proceed, and it made the system perform better. The final results of the whole system is 1.061λ in P-V value and 0.1136λ in RMS value (λ=632.8nm), this meets the demand of optical design and practical application. The result demonstrates that interferometry is a good way to be utilized and optimize in the procedure of assemble.
