AbstractEnergetically eruptive events such as flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are known to generate global waves, propagating over large distances, sometimes comparable to the solar radius. In this contribution EIT waves are modelled as waves propagating at a spherical density interface in the presence of a radially expanding magnetic field. The generation and propagation of EIT waves is studied numerically for coronal parameters. Simple equilibria allow the explanation of the coronal dimming caused by EIT waves as a region of rarified plasma created by a siphon flow.

AbstractThe dynamic response of water-in-oil AOT microemulsion droplets to perturbations caused by rapid energy transfer has been interpreted in terms of the surfactant interface bending rigidity. The Iodine Laser Temperature Jump technique was used to rapidly (1 μs) increase the microemulsion temperature and thus disturb the system equilibrium. The dynamic relaxation to the new equilibrium position was monitored by measuring the turbidity of the microemulsion over a I ms time interval immediately after the temperature jump. The rate and direction of the turbidity change depended on the initial temperature, size and salt content of the water droplets. We observed characteristic times of 2 to 10 μs and attributed them to the relaxation of the surfactant interface. A bending modulus of 0.4 kT was derived for the AOT interface, using a model for the shape perturbation of a spherical interface.

When a spherical wave is incident on a spherical interface of two different elastic-plastic, rate-independent materials, which of the many different admissible cases of reflection and transmission will actually occur must be determined in order to extend any numerical solution for subsequent times. An analytical method for this determination in terms of the known solution for times just prior to the incidence of the wave is outlined. The wave considered may be either an acceleration wave or a shock wave. The discontinuity conditions across the wave fronts and the continuity of displacement at the interface form the basis of this method and examples are given for illustration.
