Accreting black holes (BHs) produce intense radiation and powerful relativistic jets, which are affected by the BH’s spin magnitude and direction. Although thin disks might align with the BH spin axis via the Bardeen-Petterson effect, this does not apply to jet systems with thick disks. We used fully three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical simulations to study accreting BHs with various spin vectors and disk thicknesses and with magnetic flux reaching saturation. Our simulations reveal a “magneto-spin alignment” mechanism that causes magnetized disks and jets to align with the BH spin near BHs and to reorient with the outer disk farther away. This mechanism has implications for the evolution of BH mass and spin, BH feedback on host galaxies, and resolved BH images for the accreting BHs in SgrA* and M87.

VERITAS is an array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona, and is now starting its fifth year of observations of the northern Sky at energies > 100 GeV. Observations of astrophysical objects in the TeV band are sensitive probes of highly energetic processes occurring in these sources. The majority of the active galaxies detected at TeV energies are blazars, sources where we view the jet nearly along its axis. TeV and multiwavelength observations of blazars help us to better understand the mechanisms of ultrarelativistic jet production by supermassive black holes, and constrain models of particle acceleration in blazar jets. Galactic sources at TeV energies include supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and binary systems, and TeV emission is a key diagnostic of highly energetic particles in these objects. This report presents recent results from VERITAS on Galactic and extragalactic sources.

Here we discuss the possible observational effects in the X-ray emission from two relativistic accretion disks in a supermassive binary black hole system. For that purpose we developed a model and performed numerical simulations of the X-ray radiation from a relativistic accretion disk around a supermassive black hole, based on the ray-tracing method in the Kerr metric, and applied it to the case of the close binary supermassive black holes. Our results indicate that the broad Fe K? line is a powerful tool for detecting such systems and studying their properties. The most favorable candidates for observational studies are the supermassive binary black holes in the galactic mergers during the phase when the orbital velocities of their components are very large and exceed several thousand kms -1.
