Modifying g-C3N4 with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through imine linkage results in a dramatically enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which reached 10.1 mmol g−1 h−1 when 2 wt% Pt and triethanolamine were used as co-catalyst and sacrificial agent, respectively, corresponding to an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 20.7% at 425 nm.

BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites were synthesized using a thermal impregnation method for the first time. The intense visible-light absorption and large specific surface area gave 4wt.%BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites the best visible-light photocatalytic properties among all the catalysts for the photodegradation of methyl orange, about 78% after 2 h. But decreased activities were obtained with the increase of BiOCl content in the nanocomposites. Considering the light absorption, specific surface area and the quantum efficiency, the high recombination of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs of the catalysts that lowed the quantum efficiency was believed to be the critical factor for their decreased photocatalytic activities.

Porous P-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets prepared by combining P doping and thermal exfoliation exhibit a high visible-light photocatalytic H2-production activity of 1596 μmol h−1 g−1 and a quantum efficiency of 3.56% at 420 nm.

Four iron complexes were used as pre-catalysts in BiVO4–NaIO3 photocatalytic water oxidation systems. The best-performing system afforded a rather high oxygen yield and apparent quantum efficiency yield of 99.1% and 44.3%, respectively.
