Asymmetric optical transmission plays a key role in many optical systems. In this work, we propose and numerically demonstrate a dielectric–metal metasurface that can achieve high-performance asymmetric transmission for linearly polarized light in the near-infrared region. Most notably, it supports a forward transmittance peak (with a transmittance of 0.70) and a backward transmittance dip (with a transmittance of 0.07) at the same wavelength of 922 nm, which significantly enhances operation bandwidth and the contrast ratio between forward and backward transmittances. Mechanism analyses reveal that the forward transmittance peak is caused by the unidirectional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and the first Kerker condition, whereas the backward transmittance dip is due to reflection from the metal film and a strong toroidal dipole response. Our work provides an alternative and simple way to obtain high-performance asymmetric transmission devices.

Optical systems are used for analysing the internal composition and the external properties in food. The measurement of the lycopene content in fruits and vegetables is important because of its benefits to human health. Lycopene prevents cardiovascular diseases, cataracts, cancer, osteoporosis, male infertility, and peritonitis. Among the optical systems focused on the estimation and identification of lycopene molecule are high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the colorimeter, infrared near NIR spectroscopy, UV-VIS spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and the systems of multispectral imaging (MSI) and hyperspectral imaging (HSI). The main objective of this paper is to present a review of the current state of optical systems used to measure lycopene in fruits. It also reports important factors to be considered in order to improve the design and implementation of those optical systems. Finally, it was observed that measurements with HPLC and spectrophotometry present the best results but use toxic solvents and require specialized personnel for their use. Moreover, another widely used technique is colorimetry, which correlates the lycopene content using color descriptors, typically those of CIELAB. Likewise, it was identified that spectroscopic techniques and multispectral images are gaining importance because they are fast and non-invasive.

In this work, methods and procedures are investigated for the holistic simulation of the dynamicalthermal behavior of high-performance optics like lithography objectives. Flexible multibody systems in combination with model order reduction methods, finite element thermal analysis and optical system analyses are used for transient simulations of the dynamical-thermal behavior of optical systems at low computational cost.

Phase-gradient metasurfaces enable designers to tailor the behavior of electromagnetic waves at surfaces by exploiting the generalized form of Snell’s law. This ability has led to the investigation of metalenses which have the potential to significantly reduce the size, weight, and power (SWaP) of conventional optical systems. While traditional lenses are made from individual glasses, metalenses are comprised of patterned meta-atom unit Cells which are arranged in such a way so as to give the metalens its desired behavior. Therefore, any metalens’s performance is ultimately determined by that of its underlying unit cell components. However, designing meta-atoms that simultaneously achieve high performance over wide frequency bandwidths and fields-of-view is an extremely challenging problem that is best addressed with powerful optimization and inverse-design techniques.
