We study the rotational motion of objects trapped in a focused laser beam (optical tweezers). Micrometer-sized flat slabs are fabricated using two-photon photopolymerization. These objects, trapped by linearly-polarized light, tend to align parallel to the polarization plane. This alignment effect is attributed to the polarization anisotropy resulting from the object shape and we present a simple electromagnetic approach to estimate the resulting optical torque. Micro-rotors of different sizes are studied experimentally. We characterize the behavior of micro-objects when the light polarization is rotated at constant speed. Our theoretical approach gives a good prediction of how the size of micro-objects affects their rotation efficiency.

AbstractThe effect of strong magnetic fields (B ≳ 1011Gauss) upon various atomic line emission mechanisms in the X-ray range is considered, in particular for H and H-like or He-like ions, and a discussion of the detectability and significance of possible measurements is given. The cyclotron mechanism, the one- and two-photon scattering and the bremsstrahlung effects in a strong B are reviewed, as well as the role they play in determining X-ray spectra. These considerations are applied to typical models of X-ray pulsars and Gamma-ray bursters, contrasting observations of magnetic related features to the present theoretical understanding of these objects.

Abstract Quantum router is one of the essential elements in the quantum network. Conventional routers only direct a single photon from one quantum channel into another. Here, we proposed a few-photon router. The active element of the router is a single qubit chirally coupled to two independent waveguides simultaneously, where each waveguide mode provides a quantum channel. By introducing the operators of the scatter-free space and the controllable space, the output state of the one-photon and two-photon scattering are derived analytically. It is found that the qubit can direct one and two photons from one port of the incident waveguide to an arbitrarily selected port of the other waveguide with unity, respectively. However, two photons cannot be simultaneously routed to the same port due to the anti-bunch effect.
