ABSTRACTA TCO/ μc-p-i-n Si:H/AI imager is presented and analyzed. The μc-p-i-n Si:H photodiode acts as a sensing element. Contacts are used as an electrical interface. The image is acquired by a scan-out process. Sampling is performed on a rectangular grid, and the read-out of the photogenerated charges is achieved by measuring simultaneously both transverse photovoltages at the coplanar electrodes. The image representation in gray-tones is obtained by using low level processing algorithms. Basic image processing algorithms are developed for image enhancement and restoration.

This paper surveys a long term project, aimed at providing a general methodology for building up and maintaining an expert system oriented to Pattern Recognition problems. The methodology makes use of an integrated set of modules, performing different functions but sharing a common knowledge representation scheme. In particular, a learning module allows to acquire the knowledge automatically from a set of examples and another module performs sophisticated reasoning, on the basis of the available knowledge, during the recognition phase.

Architecture is inseparable from visual aspects in the form of representation as a way to establish communication. Due to digitalization and the rapid development of technology, there has been a shift in the paradigm of image representation. Manual images become digital images, from sketching and drawing to image-making and rendering. Digital rendering is considered to be object-oriented and quantitative. It has the characteristics of being precise, fast, reflecting form and materiality, with a photorealistic image as a result. There is no visible involvement of subjects such as architects, image-maker, and observers in the process because the image represents the final outcome. Here, the role of representation to evoke imagination and deeper interpretation is lost, because it does not leave room for intervention and contemplation of the design. That is why another kind of digital method emerged in the world of representation, instead of “rendering” the design as an image, it is relevant to the act of “making” an image as design representation. Its characteristic as a representation method makes the produced images have the ability to be evocative, in order to make its viewers contemplate and interpret the design, which makes it a qualitative representation. The aim of this paper is to understand the act of image-making through digital collage as a medium for qualitative representation in architectural design. By comparing digital rendering and collage images obtained through literature studies, this paper wants to offer the author’s viewpoint on the qualities and experiences brought by architectural representation.

The main thesis of the PATriCIa project is that a knowledge-based system can provide efficient and reliable support for biometricians as well as physicians involved in planning of controlled clinical trials, resulting in a higher quality of medical research. Structure and contents of study protocols are analyzed, and an object-oriented method for formally representing biometric knowledge is proposed. A study protocol can be generated from this formal representation. The programming language Prolog is used to realize the system based on a blackboard architecture. It is concluded that the knowledge representation method developed in the PATriCIa project is well suited for the purpose of generating study protocols for controlled clinical trials.
