In this study, detailed characteristics of the optical near-field based ablation-induced plasma are investigated. A Cr thin metal film samples are ablated using visible and near infrared nanosecond laser pulses coupled through an optical near-field fiber probe. The ablated plasma evolution is visualized through time-resolved emission imaging and further analyzed via spectral measurement. Unveiled qualitative differences in optical near-field ablation configuration are discussed in comparison with optical far-field ablation. The measured results support implementation of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on optical near-field ablation.

This study investigates near-infrared region Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) and their nonlinear optical response under 532 nm nanosecond laser pulses. Our experimental result shows that nonlinear transmission is reduced from 0.084 to 0.04. The observed narrowing behavior of the output pulse width shows superior optical limiting. We discuss the physical mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear optical response of the QDs. The average size of the nanocrystals was 5.5 nm. Our results suggest the possibility of using these Ag2S QDs for photoelectric, biosensor, optical ranging, and self-adaptive technologies.

Laser interference micro-structuring is a relatively efficient and cost-effective technique for fabricating periodical micro-nano-structuring surfaces. The direct fabrication of sub-micron sized dot array on silicon was performed by four interfering nanosecond laser beams with a diffractive beam splitter. The mechanism to form the dot array was analyzed and it was found that the obtained conical dot array had a negative shape of the interference pattern of four laser beams. A second-order peak between two first-order peaks also occurred due to the liquid-solid expansion.
