Abstract Fiber glass rod (i.e. FGR) is an uniaxial fiber reinforced plastic. In the movement of the rods, some dynamic characteristics such as the wave velocity and the damped coefficient are most important dynamic factors in analysis of the dynamic response of the rods. Generally, FGR are composed of two materials, fibers and resins. The particularities of the parameters for the wave velocity, etc of FGR are mainly depend on these two materials of different properties. This paper studies longitudinal velocity for FGR theoretecally and measure it by vibration method. The viscous damped coefficient is also measured by the theory of viscoelasticity. This paper presents that the viscous damped characteristic of material is mainly depend on the coupling mass between the rods.

Spin-blind-riveting (SBR) is a newly developed joining process, which combines the advantages of conventional blind riveting and flow drilling screws. With this technology, it is possible to join two different materials by one-sided accessibility without the need of pre-drilling holes. This complex process cannot be simulated by 2D finite element method. Therefore, a more realistic 3D finite element model for the SBR process is developed using the commercial software package ABAQUS. The applicability of this work is demonstrated for joining magnesium alloy AZ31B and carbon-fibre reinforced plastics. Dynamic effects, thermomechanical coupling, material damage laws, and contact criterion were taken into account in the model. The Johnson–Cook material constitutive equation was used, considering the effects of strain, strain rate, and temperature on material properties. Finally, through simulation, the joint formation, stress distribution and riveting temperature were obtained. Furthermore, a series of experiments were carried out to validate the simulation results. The numerical results are in a good agreement with the experimental results and confirm the promising properties of SBR joints between metal and fibre-reinforced plastics.

The conditions necessary for the application of fracture mechanics to anisotropic materials were examined and verified experimentally on orthotropic plates. It was observed that crack extension, by opening and forward sliding, occurred independently and the associated stress-intensity factors at the state of incipient fracture are material constants. An empirical relation (k1/k1c) + (k2/k2c)2 = 1 was found to be a fracture criterion for both balsa wood and fiber-glass-reinforced plastic plates, inferring the existence of a general law of fracture for orthotropic materials.

Due to the increase of environment requirements, Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) chimney liners are frequently used in coal-fired units. Wind and earthquake loads play an important role in the design of FRP chimney liners. Most of the engineering staff are still accustomed to accept single model, although, conjunctive model can reflect the effect of concrete cylinder on FRP liners and obtain more accurate internal forces of the liners under earthquake and wind loads. In this paper, a novel modified single model method is put forward to obtain accurate results.
