This paper presents the design of a collimator lens for use with the Lightbrick that uses total internal reflection as well as convex and concave surfaces. The Lightbrick is a light collector for the Natural Light Illumination System. The collimator lens is constructed using freeform surfaces which can be calculated through geometric-optics. Verified by optical simulation, using the collimator lens can achieve 90.3% luminous flux within ±2°, and optical efficiency improves by 48% in the collimator lens output. The collimator lens converges the light distribution of the Lightbrick and enhances the transmission efficiency of the Natural Light Illumination System.

Prismatic elements are typical devices of natural light illumination system for redirecting and collecting daylight. Based on the principles of optics, this paper presents a simple mathematical matrix ray-tracing methodology through which a detailed intensity distribution of parallel light beam incident onto a right angled prism from different incident angles can be calculated precisely. We also present the distribution of the secondary emerged intensity from a prism illuminated by the emerged light of an adjacent prism. The direction, concentration, and distribution of intensity of the emerged light from the parallel light incident onto a surface of the right-angle prism, as well as daylight illuminate on a prismatic collector, are precisely calculated. The detailed calculation of the emerged light re-incident onto the adjacent prism or emerged out of the prismatic element presented that most of daylight are directly emerged out and are confined in some directions at earlier morning and afternoon, and the emerged light re-incident into the adjacent prism at noon around. This detailed calculation model of parallel light beam incident to a prismatic element can be applied to the hybrid natural light illumination system, as well as to the prism-relative solar illumination system for the improvement of efficiency.

The light illumination for the enclosed target lane is designed in the paper. The visual sensing factors reflecting the illumination system are found out and the specific system targets are determined according to the human eyes’ Physiological structure and visual features. The illumination systems for the target surface and inner of the target lane are designed. The illumination mode can be adjusted properly based on the optical aiming devices and mechanical aiming devices, which can make shooters feel the natural light environment comfortably to achieve the optimal condition of the human-and-gun matching.

The energy consumption of artificial lighting and its impacts on health have stimulated research into natural lighting systems. However, natural lighting system designs are mainly custom, making them costly and difficult to replicate. This study took an office space as a testing field in order to develop a highly adaptable and adjustable modular natural light illumination system. We divided the system into multiple module designs, demonstrated the use of simple development and fabrication processes and integrated a freeform reflector into the system. In creating a freeform mirror, the optical simulation results of the tested field were regressed (through polynomial regression) to achieve a uniformly illuminated plane, and a high-efficiency light-emitting system was produced. Finally, an active heliostat was used to collect sunlight, combined with actual manufacturing verification and measurement results, in order to create an excellent indoor lighting system. As a result, we presented a low-cost and easy-to-design natural light illumination system for the assisted lighting of office areas.
