In manufacturing systems, pick-up operations by vacuum grippers may fail owing to manufacturing errors in an object’s surface that are within the allowable tolerance limits. In such situations, manual interference is required to resume system operation, which results in considerable loss of time as well as economic losses. Although vacuum grippers have many advantages and are widely used in the industry, it is highly difficult to directly monitor the current machine status and provide appropriate recovery feedback for stable operation. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to detect the success or failure of a suction operation in advance by analyzing the amount of outlet air pressure in the Venturi line. This was achieved by installing an air pressure sensor on the Venturi line to predict whether the current suction action will be successful. Through empirical experiments, it was found that downward movements in the z-axis of the vacuum gripper can easily rectify a faulty gripper suction operation. Real-time monitoring results verified that predictive process adjustment of the pick-up operation can be performed by modifying the z-position of the vacuum gripper.

To solve the problems of low processing efficiency and poor glass surface quality when using rare earth polishing powder to grind super-hard K9 glass. The potential, phase structure, surface morphology, and particle size distribution of the nano-rare earth polishing powder were characterized. Compare the evaluation indexes such as polishing efficiency, surface morphology, and contact angle after the polishing process is changed. The results of the comparative study show that the average surface roughness of the glass after heating ultrasonic polishing process is 0.9064 nm, the polishing rate reaches 0.748 μm/min, the average surface roughness of the glass without heating ultrasonic polishing process is 1.3175 nm, and the polishing rate reaches 0.586 μm/min, the ultrasonic assisted polishing process is superior to the conventional polishing process. The heating ultrasonic method provides experimental basis for precise and rapid processing.

This research proposes a new application of 3-axis CNC milling machine for polishing the 60 HRC hardness steels. The rotary polishing tools are designed by refer to the end-mill ball nose’s design. The diamond powder are coated in rotary polishing tools by resinoid bonding method and concentrated in 4.4 karat/cm2. The Zig-milling tool paths are used to polish the hardness steel. After polishing, the confocal laser scanning microscope is used to analyze the arithmetic mean surface roughness of the hardness steels. The L12 orthogonal array of the Taguchi’s method is selected to conduct the matrix experiment to determine the optimal polishing process parameters. The diamond grit size and cutting speed of the rotary polishing tools, feed rate and step over of the tool path, the depth of polishing process penetration, and polishing time are used to study. The combination of the optimal level for each factor of the hardness steel polishing process are used to study again in the confirmation experiment. The predicted signal to noise ratio of smaller - the better under optimal condition are calculated by using the data from the experiment. The combination of the optimal level for each factor are used to study again in the confirmation experiment and the result show that polishing time was a dominant parameter for the surface roughness and the next was depth of penetration. The response surface design is then used to build the relationship between the input parameters and output responses. The experimental results show that the integrated approach does indeed find the optimal parameters that result in very good output responses in the rotary polishing tools polished hardness mould steel using CNC milling machine. The mean surface roughness of hardness steel polishing process is improved by the diamond rotary tools with the 3-axis CNC milling machine.

A methodology based on relax-type wavelet network was proposed for predicting surface roughness. After the influencing factors of roughness model were analyzed and the modified wavelet pack algorithm for signal filtering was discussed, the structure of artificial network for prediction was developed. The real-time forecast on line was achieved by the nonlinear mapping and learning mechanism in Elman algorithm based on the vibration acceleration and cutting parameters. The weights in network were optimized using genetic algorithm before back-propagation algorithm to reduce learning time. The validation of this methodology is carried out for turning aluminum and steel in the experiments and its prediction error is measured less than 3%.

Magnesium alloy is a material with a high strength to weight ratio and is suitable for various applications such as in automotive, aerospace, electronics, industrial, biomedical and sports. Most end products require a mirror-like finish, therefore, this paper will present how a mirror-like finishing can be achieved using a high speed face milling that is equivalent to the manual polishing process. The high speed cutting regime for magnesium alloy was studied at the range of 900-1400 m/min, and the feed rate for finishing at 0.03-0.09 mm/tooth. The surface roughness found for this range of cutting parameters were between 0.061-0.133 µm, which is less than the 0.5µm that can be obtained by manual polishing. Furthermore, from the S/N ratio plots, the optimum cutting condition for the surface roughness can be achieved at a cutting speed of 1100 m/min, feed rate 0.03 mm/tooth, axial depth of cut of 0.20 mm and radial depth of cut of 10 mm. From the experimental result the lowest surface roughness of 0.061µm was obtained at 900 m/min with the same conditions for other cutting parameters. This study revealed that by milling AZ91D at a high speed cutting, it is possible to eliminate the polishing process to achieve a mirror-like finishing.

In order to achieve the smooth surface of diamond, several kinds of mixture oxidizing agents have been used to polish the single crystal diamond by a designed polishing apparatus. The existing of graphite and amorphous carbon has been found in the surface of diamond after polishing. The mechanochemical actions of oxidizing agents and the polishing iron plate have been proved. The mixture of oxidizing agents can decrease the polishing temperature so that the super-smooth surface of single crystal diamond can be achieved at lower temperature. The method provided is benefit not only to simplify polishing device and control the polishing process, but also to improve the removal rate and surface roughness.

This paper represents a dual-plane polishing method for ceramics ball. Compared with traditional ball polishing method, its upper and lower plate are all flat and easy to use soft pad to polish, so it can largely reduce the surface mechanical damage and obtain high quality processing surface. This paper analyzes surface polishing trajectory by calculation and simulation to test the polishing trajectory uniformity. A mathematics model of polishing process is established to disintegrate the process of a balls movement. Experiment is operated in dual-plane planetary polishing machine. The result shows that perfect polishing surface and spherical error can be obtained under the proper process parameters, the surface roughness achieves 4nm and the spherical error can reach 0.217μm.

The three-dimensional vibratory strengthening and polishing technology was used to strengthen and polish aeroengine blades with complicated surfaces. At first, the principle of the strengthening and polishing process was introduced, which combined strengthening process with polishing process. Then, the technological parameters influenced on the surface quality were investigated. The principal variables were the media hardness, the frequency and amplitude of the vibration, and duration of the vibratory strengthening and polishing. The optimum parameters were obtained. Experimental results revealed that, after strengthening and polishing, the surface roughness of aeroengine blades was reduced from Ra0.35-0.5μm to Ra0.1-0.12μm, and fatigue strength was increased by approximately 50%.
