The friction conditions when cutting fiber-reinforced polymers are significantly influenced by the shape of the tool cutting surface. Hence, different strip drawing tests were carried out at a 5 MPa surface pressure to investigate the behavior of unidirectional CFRP with different test tool surface preparations. The tool surfaces were ground and blasted. The created surface topographies are characterized by particular parameters of roughness and function which affect the sliding friction of the CFRP / tool pair.

The paper is focused on the determination of the course and change of the surface quality parameters obtained by the laser engraving of the material known under commercial name polymethyl methacrylate. The paper aims to find mathematical relations based on regression analysis for amplitudes parameters Ra and Rz. For this purpose, a sample of variable technology parameters will be machined followed by the surface measuring and evaluation using the Talysurf CLI 500 3D Surface Scanner. Thus the data obtained will be subjected to the detailed statistical analysis to check homoscedasticity, the presence of outliers, and multidimensional normality testing.

Magnesium alloys exhibit a very good ratio of mechanical properties versus specific weight, thus making it an important choice for parts used in automotive, aeronautic and medical industry. The distribution of residual stress in the superficial layer of the material is regarded as one of the factors defining the surface quality of a machined part. It is therefore important to know this distribution as it is closely related to fatigue and corrosion resistance, especially for the parts working in aggressive environments (i.e. biomedical devices). The present paper focuses on the determination of the residual stresses induced in a magnesium alloy part processed by milling, and their effects on surface quality.

The research of the determination of the fractal characteristics of the surface of a material proposes the use of a stationary profilograph and a computer program for calculating the Hurst exponent. The low accuracy of fractal analysis using the well-known computer program Fractan is revealed. A computer program developed in VBA for the fractal analysis of the time series is described. The high accuracy of the algorithms for calculating the Hurst exponent incorporated in this program is shown.

The 5-axis tool positioning strategy named rotary contact method (RCM) for sculptured surfaces machining has been developed in our previous paper (Fan et al., 2012, “Rotary Contact Method for 5-Axis Tool Positioning,” Trans. ASME J. Manuf. Sci. Eng., 134(2), p. 021004). The RCM finds the optimal tool positions by rotating the tool backward based on the offset surface, and can generate big machined strip width. However, the RCM can only guarantee a contact point because of the design surface's geometric asymmetry in most cases, which leads to the poor surface quality. To resolve this problem, the improved rotary contact method (IRCM) is developed in this paper. The parametric equation of the circular curve of the toroidal cutter defined by the backward and the sideward tilt angle of the tool is strictly deduced. According to the nested optimization of the two tool's angles, there are two contact points found between the tool's cutting surface and the design surface around the feed direction without gouging. Tool positions investigation, machining simulation and cutting experiment are all performed based on a test surface. The results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the IRCM and show that the IRCM can apparently improve the surface quality compared to the RCM.

Drilling is the most commonly used machining process in furniture industries. In this study the eighteen tests of tool durability for different values of the analyzed cutting parameters were carried out. Based on the results of investigations, the influence of selected parameters on the cutting surface quality was determined. Mathematical models based on analysis of variance (ANOVA), allowing to estimate the surface quality in the cutting process were proposed.

Presented is the possibility of reuse abrasive grains in abrasive waterjet cutting. The disintegration particles of garnet # 80 used to create a new abrasive garnet, corresponding to the fresh garnet # 120. In order to determine the ability of cutting recycling abrasive grains was carried out the aluminium alloy cutiing by using fresh and recycling garnet # 120. The experimental investigations of cutting surface quality focused on evaluation of surface geometrical structure.
