<p>Open large-sample datasets are important for various reasons: i) they enable large-sample analyses, ii) they democratize access to data, iii) they enable large-sample comparative studies and foster reproducibility, and iv) they are a key driver for recent developments of machine-learning based modelling approaches.</p><p>Recently, various large-sample datasets have been released (e.g. different country-specific CAMELS datasets), however, all of them contain only data of individual catchments distributed across entire countries and not connected river networks.</p><p>Here, we present LamaH, a new dataset covering all of Austria and the foreign upstream areas of the Danube, spanning a total of 170.000 km² in 9 different countries with discharge observations for 882 gauges. The dataset also includes 15 different meteorological time series, derived from ERA5-Land, for two different basin delineations: First, corresponding to the entire upstream area of a particular gauge, and second, corresponding only to the area between a particular gauge and its upstream gauges. The time series data for both, meteorological and discharge data, is included in hourly and daily resolution and covers a period of over 35 years (with some exceptions in discharge data for a couple of gauges).</p><p>Sticking closely to the CAMELS datasets, LamaH also contains more than 60 catchment attributes, derived for both types of basin delineations. The attributes include climatic, hydrological and vegetation indices, land cover information, as well as soil, geological and topographical properties. Additionally, the runoff gauges are classified by over 20 different attributes, including information about human impact and indicators for data quality and completeness. Lastly, LamaH also contains attributes for the river network itself, like gauge topology, stream length and the slope between two sequential gauges.</p><p>Given the scope of LamaH, we hope that this dataset will serve as a solid database for further investigations in various tasks of hydrology. The extent of data combined with the interconnected river network and the high temporal resolution of the time series might reveal deeper insights into water transfer and storage with appropriate methods of modelling.</p>

The Impact

Abstract. Atmospheric CO2 drives most of the greenhouse effect increase. One major uncertainty on the future rate of increase of CO2 in the atmosphere is the impact of the anticipated climate change on the vegetation. Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVM) are used to address this question. ORCHIDEE is such a DGVM that has proven useful for climate change studies. However, there is no objective and methodological way to accurately assess each new available version on the global scale. In this paper, we submit a methodological evaluation of ORCHIDEE by correlating satellite-derived Vegetation Index time series against those of the modeled Fraction of absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR). A perfect correlation between the two is not expected, however an improvement of the model should lead to an increase of the overall performance. We detail two case studies in which model improvements are demonstrated, using our methodology. In the first one, a new phenology version in ORCHIDEE is shown to bring a significant impact on the simulated annual cycles, in particular for C3 Grasses and C3 Crops. In the second case study, we compare the simulations when using two different weather fields to drive ORCHIDEE. The ERA-Interim forcing leads to a better description of the FPAR interannual anomalies than the simulation forced by a mixed CRU-NCEP dataset. This work shows that long time series of satellite observations, despite their uncertainties, can identify weaknesses in global vegetation models, a necessary first step to improving them.

Multi-temporal images are now of standard use in remote sensing of vegetation during monitoring and classification. Temporal vegetation signatures (i. e., vegetation indices as functions of time) generated, poses many challenges, primarily due to signal to noise-related issues. This study investigates which methods generate the most appropriate smoothed curves of vegetation signatures on MODIS NDVI time series. The filtering techniques compared were the HANTS algorithm which is based on Fourier analyses and Wavelet temporal algorithm which uses the wavelet analysis to generate the smoothed curves. The study was conducted in four different regions of the Minas Gerais State. The smoothed data were used as input data vectors for vegetation classification by means of artificial neural networks for comparison purpose. A comparison of the results was ultimately discussed in this work showing encouraging results and similarity between the two filtering techniques used.

Change detection methods are often incapable of accurately detecting changes within time series that are heavily influenced by seasonal variations. Techniques for de-seasoning time series or methods that apply the spatial context have been used to improve the results of change detection. However, few studies have explored Landsat’s shortwave infrared channel (SWIR 2) to discriminate between seasonal changes and land use/land cover changes (LULCC). Here, we explored the effectiveness of Operational Land Imager (OLI) spectral bands and vegetation indices for detecting deforestation in highly seasonal areas of Brazilian savannas. We adopted object-based image analysis (OBIA), applying a multidate segmentation to an OLI time series to generate input data for discrimination of deforestation from seasonal changes using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. We found adequate separability between deforested objects and seasonal changes using SWIR 2. Using spectral indices computed from SWIR 2, the RF algorithm generated a change map with an overall accuracy of 88.3%. For deforestation, the producer’s accuracy was 88.0% and the user’s accuracy was 84.6%. The SWIR 2 channel as well as the mid-infrared burn index presented the highest importance among spectral variables computed by the RF average impurity decrease measure. Our results give support to further change detection studies regarding to suitable spectral channels and provided a useful foundation for savanna change detection using an object-based method applied to Landsat time series.

For more than ten years, Central Chile has faced drought conditions, which impact crop production and quality, increasing food security risk. Under this scenario, implementing management practices that allow increasing water use efficiency is urgent. The study was carried out on kiwifruit trees, located in the O’Higgins region, Chile for season 2018–2019 and 2019–2020. We evaluate the time-series of nine vegetation indices in the VNIR and SWIR regions derived from Sentinel-2 (A/B) satellites to establish how much variability in the canopy water status there was. Over the study’s site, eleven sensors were installed in five trees, which continuously measured the leaf’s turgor pressure (Yara Water-Sensor). A strong Spearman’s (ρ) correlation between turgor pressure and vegetation indices was obtained, having −0.88 with EVI and −0.81 with GVMI for season 2018–2019, and lower correlation for season 2019–2020, reaching −0.65 with Rededge1 and −0.66 with EVI. However, the NIR range’s indices were influenced by the vegetative development of the crop rather than its water status. The red-edge showed better performance as the vegetative growth did not affect it. It is necessary to expand the study to consider higher variability in kiwifruit’s water conditions and incorporate the sensitivity of different wavelengths.
