Distinction of lands corresponding to hierarchical sequences of plant communities means hierarchical classification of ecosystems. In this context, it is essential in determining of effective environmental characteristics at each different hierarchic level of vegetation distinction. Thus, a hierarchical mapping including ecological land units can be provided owing to comparison of same hierarchical level of vegetation classes with the land units marked at the hierarchical level of the map. The study was carried out in order to classify and map hierarchically Yazili Canyon Nature Park situated in the Mediterranean region, Turkey. 107 sample plots were selected. TWINSPAN (the two-way indicator test) was applied in order to divide land into units, and chi-square tests were applied for confirmation of the units. Interspesific correlation analysis was also applied to determine the indicator species at each level of division. As a result, six portions were defined at different hierarchical levels in Yazili Canyon Nature Park. Climatic heterogeneity – which originated from the heterogeneous landscape structure of the canyon – plays an important role in this separation. Santrauka Hierarchinis augalijos pasiskirstymas vietovėje lemia hierarchinę augalijos klasifikaciją. Svarbu nustatyti efektyvias aplinkos apsaugos charakteristikas kiekviename hierarchiniame augalijos lygmenyje. Tyrimas vyko siekiant atlikti hierarchinę ekosistemos klasifikaciją ir sukurti hierarchinį Turkijos Viduržemio jūros regiono Yazili kanjono gamtinio parko žemėlapį. Pasirinkta 107 ploteliai. Skirstant į tam tikrus vienetus, dviem būdais taikytas indikacinis testas (TWINSPAN), vienetai įvertinti pagal chi kvadrato testą. Abipusės koreliacijos būdu kiekviename lygmenyje nustatyta indikacinės rūšys. Pagal tai skirtinguose Yazili kanjono gamtinio parko hierarchiniuose lygiuose apibrėžtos šešios dalys. Skirstymui didelę įtaką turėjo tokio tipo vietovei būdingas klimato heterogeniškumas, kurį lemia kanjonui būdingas aplinkos heterogeniškumas.

There is a growing need to map rice ecosystems and to develop methods for monitoring rice distribution in order to account for rapid land use changes worldwide. In this study, we evaluated a methodology based on Vegetation Indices time series derived from an 8-day MODIS composite to identify rice fields and develop rice maps that can be timely updated in the long term. We have assessed the potential of the Spectral Shape Index time series and compared its performance with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in two coastal locations and in an inland location in the Mediterranean Region for 2012. A profile similarity comparison method, the Spectral Angle Mapper, was accomplished between the reference rice annual profile and the annual profiles of both indices in a pixel basis in order to determine rice pixels. The resultant maps were validated with rice masks, where available, or ortophotos and crop surface statistics where not. The results obtained demonstrated the potential of both indices to provide accurate rice maps when applied together with spectral matching techniques. The overall accuracy was 92.8%, 98.1% and 90.1% for the Spectral Shape Index and 92.4%, 77.24% and 82.8% for the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in each location. The excellent performance of the Spectral Shape Index in the three locations highlighted the importance of exploring angular indices to improve the identification of land cover dynamics.

AbstractThis paper estimates a theory-based regression model which studies the macro-economic impact of environmental and consumption risks on consumption growth in the Mediterranean region. The analysis is carried out using time series aggregate data for 13 Mediterranean countries over the period 1965–2008. The results indicate that both risks and their interaction significantly influence consumption dynamics. The estimates of the indices of relative risk aversion and relative prudence, as well as the relative preference for the quality of environment, suggest marked cross-country heterogeneity.
