We designed and synthesized ITIC5 by replacing benzene-fused end groups of ITIC1 with thiophene-fused end groups and investigated effects of thiophene/benzene-fused termini on optical and electronic potentials of these molecules as well as the performance of organic solar cells.

The dipole moment of FREAs’ terminals has been unveiled as an important factor and its working mechanism has been thoroughly investigated. Our results demonstrate that the dipole moment should also be taken into account in designing ternary OSCs.

Cyano-group (−C≡N) is an electron-withdrawing group, which has been widely used to construct high-performance fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs). Benefiting from these FREAs, the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells...

In this work, three dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrol fused-ring electron acceptors (IPT-2F, IPTT-2F, and IPTTT-2F) have been successfully developed as efficient asymmetric nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) for organic solar cells (OSCs).
