AbstractProton ion acceleration via laser-generated plasma is investigated at relatively low laser pulse intensity, on the order of 1010 W/cm2. Time-of-flight technique is employed to measure the ion energy and the relative yield. An ion collector and an ion energy analyzer are used with this aim and to distinguish the number of charge states of the produced ions. The kinetic energy and the emission yield are measured through a consolidated theory, which assumes that the ion emission follows the Coulomb-Boltzmann-Shifted function. The proton stream is generated by thin and thick hydrogenated targets and it is dependent on the free electron states, which increase the laser absorption coefficient and the ion acceleration. The maximum proton energy, of about 200 eV, and the maximum proton amount can be obtained with thick metallic hydrogenated materials, such as the titanium hydrate TiH2.

Measurements were performed to determine the dynamical characteristics of high pressure SF6 absorption at the 10.4 μm band of CO2 as a function of laser pulse intensity. Both long (~ 200 ns FWHM) and short (~ 5 ns FWHM) CO2 laser pulses were employed. The observed pulse transmission characteristics can be accounted for using a vibrational bath model, which allows for the very large number of levels in the absorption spectrum of SF6.

Laser short-pulse heating of a nano-size wire is considered and entropy generation rate is predicted during the heating pulse. The analytical solution of the heat equation is obtained using the Lie point symmetry for the laser short-pulse heating. The nano-size wire is assumed to be symmetric along its y-axis. Laser pulse intensity is considered to be Gaussian at the irradiated surface while the exponential decay of the laser pulse is incorporated in the time domain. It is found that surface temperature variation in the lattice subsystem almost follows the laser pulse intensity distribution at the surface. Entropy generation rate attains low values along the symmetry axis and it increases considerably in the region of the nano-size wire edges. This behavior is associated with the temperature gradient, which attains high values in the region close to the nano-size wire edge.
