Advances in robotic systems for rehabilitation purposes have led to the development of specialized robot-assisted rehabilitation clinics. In addition, advantageous features of polymer optical fiber (POF) sensors such as light weight, multiplexing capabilities, electromagnetic field immunity and flexibility have resulted in the widespread use of POF sensors in many areas. Considering this background, this paper presents an integrated POF intensity variation-based sensor system for the instrumentation of different devices. We consider different scenarios for physical rehabilitation, resembling a clinic for robot-assisted rehabilitation. Thus, a multiplexing technique for POF intensity variation-based sensors was applied in which an orthosis for flexion/extension movement, a modular exoskeleton for gait assistance and a treadmill were instrumented with POF angle and force sensors, where all the sensors were integrated in the same POF system. In addition, wearable sensors for gait analysis and physiological parameter monitoring were also proposed and applied in gait exercises. The results show the feasibility of the sensors and methods proposed, where, after the characterization of each sensor, the system was implemented with three volunteers: one for the orthosis on the flexion/extension movements, one for the exoskeleton for gait assistance and the other for the free gait analysis using the proposed wearable POF sensors. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first time that optical fiber sensors have been used as a multiplexed and integrated solution for the simultaneous assessment of different robotic devices and rehabilitation protocols, where such an approach results in a compact, fully integrated and low-cost system, which can be readily employed in any clinical environment.

With an ageing society comes the increased prevalence of gait disorders. The restriction of mobility leads to a considerable reduction in the quality of life, because associated falls increase morbidity and mortality. Consideration of gait analysis data often alters surgical recommendations. For that reason, the early and systematic diagnostic treatment of gait disorders can spare a lot of suffering. As modern gait analysis systems are, in most cases, still very costly, many patients are not privileged enough to have access to comparable therapies. Low-cost systems such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) still pose major challenges, but offer possibilities for automatic real-time motion analysis. In this paper, we present a new approach to reliably detect human gait phases, using IMUs and machine learning methods. This approach should form the foundation of a new medical device to be used for gait analysis. A model is presented combining deep 2D-convolutional and LSTM networks to perform a classification task; it predicts the current gait phase with an accuracy of over 92% on an unseen subject, differentiating between five different phases. In the course of the paper, different approaches to optimize the performance of the model are presented and evaluated.

An enhanced plastic optical fiber (POF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is proposed by employing a double-sided polished structure. The sensor is fabricated by polishing two sides of the POF symmetrically along with the fiber axis, and a layer of Au film is deposited on each side of the polished region. The SPR can be excited on both polished surfaces with Au film coating, and the number of light reflections will be increased by using this structure. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed sensor has an enhanced SPR effect. The visibility and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of spectrum can be improved for the high measured refractive index (RI). A sensitivity of 4284.8 nm/RIU is obtained for the double-sided POF-based SPR sensor when the measured liquid RI is 1.42. The proposed SPR sensor is easy fabrication and low cost, which can provide a larger measurement range and action area to the measured samples, and it has potential application prospects in the oil industry and biochemical sensing fields.

An optical fiber solution-concentration sensor based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) is proposed in this paper. The WGM solution-concentration sensors were used to measure salt solutions, in which the concentrations ranged from 1% to 25% and the wavelength drifted from the left to the right. The experimental results showed an average sensitivity of approximately 0.372 nm/% and anR2linearity of 0.8835. The proposed WGM sensors are of low cost, feasible for mass production, and durable for solution-concentration sensing.

Optical fiber Raman amplifier (OFRA) with wide and flat gain bandwidth has been widely applied in the fields of optical communication, sensing and measurement. However, the performance optimization is always one of the hot topics in the study of OFRA, because its output characteristics are hardly dependent to some key designing parameters. In this paper, to overcome the problems above, we adopt a spectrum analysis based method to study the output performance of an OFRA system with backward pumping. By simulating the operation of the OFRA system, its output characteristics are first showed easily, with the advantages of real time, low cost, and low complexity. Further, according to the numerical results obtained, the optimal parameters of an OFRA system are determinate, and the performance in terms of output power, signal noise ratio, and the level of gain flatness is improved and optimized obviously.
