Abstract As technology has advanced, so has our insatiable need to sense what is around us. This commentary discusses the markets that use optic and photonic sensors, which areas can expect growth, and which sensing technologies are mature and which are emerging. A brief
discussion introduces some disruptive technologies that will enable smart sensing. Included is a more detailed understanding of the markets that are making use of fiber optic sensors and some gaps associated with that technology.
