The regional climate model RegCM version 4.6, developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis, was used to simulate the radiation budget over China. Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) satellite data were utilized to evaluate the simulation results based on 4 radiative components: net shortwave (NSW) radiation at the surface of the earth and top of the atmosphere (TOA) under all-sky and clear-sky conditions. The performance of the model for low-value areas of NSW was superior to that for high-value areas. NSW at the surface and TOA under all-sky conditions was significantly underestimated; the spatial distribution of the bias was negative in the north and positive in the south, bounded by 25°N for the annual and seasonal averaged difference maps. Compared with the all-sky condition, the simulation effect under clear-sky conditions was significantly better, which indicates that the cloud fraction is the key factor affecting the accuracy of the simulation. In particular, the bias of the TOA NSW under the clear-sky condition was <±10 W m-2 in the eastern areas. The performance of the model was better over the eastern monsoon region in winter and autumn for surface NSW under clear-sky conditions, which may be related to different levels of air pollution during each season. Among the 3 areas, the regional average biases overall were largest (negative) over the Qinghai-Tibet alpine region and smallest over the eastern monsoon region.

Space-borne satellite radiometers measure Sea Surface Temperature (SST), which is pivotal to studies of air-sea interactions and ocean features. Under clear sky conditions, high resolution measurements are obtainable. But under cloudy conditions, data analysis is constrained to the available low resolution measurements. We assess the efficiency of Deep Learning (DL) architectures, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to downscale oceanographic data from low spatial resolution (SR) to high SR. With a focus on SST Fields of Bay of Bengal, this study proves that Very Deep Super Resolution CNN can successfully reconstruct SST observations from 15 km SR to 5km SR, and 5km SR to 1km SR. This outcome calls attention to the significance of DL models explicitly trained for the reconstruction of high SR SST fields by using low SR data. Inference on DL models can act as a substitute to the existing computationally expensive downscaling technique: Dynamical Downsampling. The complete code is available on this Github Repository.

Summertime continental shallow cumulus clouds (ShCu) are detected using Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-16 reflectance data, with cross-validation by observations from ground-based stereo cameras at the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains site. A ShCu cloudy pixel is identified when the GOES reflectance exceeds the clear-sky surface reflectance by a reflectance detection threshold of ShCu, ΔR. We firstly construct diurnally varying clear-sky surface reflectance maps and then estimate the ∆R. A GOES simulator is designed, projecting the clouds reconstructed by stereo cameras towards the surface along the satellite’s slanted viewing direction. The dynamic ShCu detection threshold ΔR is determined by making the GOES cloud fraction (CF) equal to the CF from the GOES simulator. Although there are temporal variabilities in ΔR, cloud fractions and cloud size distributions can be well reproduced using a constant ΔR value of 0.045. The method presented in this study enables daytime ShCu detection, which is usually falsely reported as clear sky in the GOES-16 cloud mask data product. Using this method, a new ShCu dataset can be generated to bridge the observational gap in detecting ShCu, which may transition into deep precipitating clouds, and to facilitate further studies on ShCu development over heterogenous land surface.

Land-surface temperature (LST) plays a key role in the physical processes of surface energy and water balance from local through global scales. The widely used one kilometre resolution daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST product has missing values due to the influence of clouds. Therefore, a large number of clear-sky LST reconstruction methods have been developed to obtain spatially continuous LST datasets. However, the clear-sky LST is a theoretical value that is often an overestimate of the real value. In fact, the real LST (also known as cloudy-sky LST) is more necessary and more widely used. The existing cloudy-sky LST algorithms are usually somewhat complicated, and the accuracy needs to be improved. It is necessary to convert the clear-sky LST obtained by the currently better-developed methods into cloudy-sky LST. We took the clear-sky LST, cloud-cover duration, downward shortwave radiation, albedo and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as five independent variables and the real LST at the ground stations as the dependent variable to perform multiple linear regression. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the cloudy-sky LST retrieved by this method ranged from 3.5–3.9 K. We further analyzed different cases of the method, and the results suggested that this method has good flexibility. When we chose fewer independent variables, different clear-sky algorithms, or different regression tools, we also achieved good results. In addition, the method calculation process was relatively simple and can be applied to other research areas. This study preliminarily explored the influencing factors of the real LST and can provide a possible option for researchers who want to obtain cloudy-sky LST through clear-sky LST, that is, a convenient conversion method. This article lays the foundation for subsequent research in various fields that require real LST.

The detection of low stratus and fog (LSF) at dawn remains limited because of their optical features and weak solar radiation. LSF could be better identified by simultaneous observations of two geostationary satellites from different viewing angles. The present study developed an advanced dual-satellite method (DSM) using FY-4A and Himawari-8 for LSF detection at dawn in terms of probability indices. Optimal thresholds for identifying the LSF from the spectral tests in DSM were determined by the comparison with ground observations of fog and clear sky in/around Japan between April to November of 2018. Then the validation of these thresholds was carried out for the same months of 2019. The DSM essentially used two traditional single-satellite tests for daytime such as the 0.65-μm reflectance (R0.65), and the brightness temperature difference between 3.7 μm and 11 μm (BTD3.7-11); in addition to four more tests such as Himawari-8 R0.65 and BTD13.5-8.5, the dual-satellite stereoscopic difference in BTD3.7-11 (ΔBTD3.7-11), and that in the Normalized Difference Snow Index (ΔNDSI). The four were found to show very high skill scores (POD: 0.82 ± 0.04; FAR, 0.10 ± 0.04). The radiative transfer simulation supported optical characteristics of LSF in observations. The LSF probability indices (average POD: 0.83, FAR: 0.10) were constructed by a statistical combination of the four to derive the five-class probability values of LSF occurrence in a grid. The indices provided more details and useful results in LSF spatial distribution, compared to the single satellite observations (i.e., R0.65 and/or BTD3.7-11) of either LSF or no LSF. The present DSM could apply for remote sensing of environmental phenomena if the stereoscopic viewing angle between two satellites is appropriate.

In this work, the automatic classification of daily irradiance profiles registered in a photovoltaic installation located in the south of Spain was carried out for a period of nine years, with a sampling frequency of 5 min, and the subsequent analysis of the operation of the elements of the installation on each type of day was also performed. The classification was based on the total daily irradiance values and the fluctuations of this parameter throughout the day. The irradiance profiles were grouped into nine different categories using unsupervised machine learning algorithms for clustering, implemented in Python. It was found that the behaviour of the modules and the inverter of the installation was influenced by the type of day obtained, such that the latter worked with a better average efficiency on days with higher irradiance and lower fluctuations. However, the modules worked with better average efficiency on days with irradiance fluctuations than on clear sky days. This behaviour of the modules may be due to the presence, on days with passing clouds, of the phenomenon known as cloud enhancement, in which, due to reflections of radiation on the edges of the clouds, irradiance values can be higher at certain moments than those that occur on clear sky days, without passing clouds. This is due to the higher energy generated during these irradiance peaks and to the lower temperatures that the module reaches due to the shaded areas created by the clouds, resulting in a reduction in its temperature losses.
