Three-dimensional (3D) images consisting of arrays of voxels can now be routinely obtained from several different types of microscopes. These include both the transmission and emission modes of the confocal scanning laser microscope (but not its most common reflection mode), the secondary ion mass spectrometer, and computed tomography using electrons, X-rays or other signals. Compared to the traditional use of serial sectioning (which includes sequential polishing of hard materials), these newer techniques eliminate difficulties of alignment of slices, and maintain uniform resolution in the depth direction. However, the resolution in the z-direction may be different from that within each image plane, which makes the voxels non-cubic and creates some difficulties for subsequent analysis.

The addition of fibres or particles (TiB2, SiC etc.) into TiAl intermetallic alloys could increase their toughness without compromising their good high temperature mechanical and chemical properties. This paper briefly discribes the microstructure developed by a TiAl/TiB2 composite material fabricated with the XD™ process and forged at 960°C.The specimens for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were prepared in the usual way (i.e. diamond polishing and argon ion beam thinning) and examined on a JEOL 4000EX for microstucture and on a Philips 400T equipped with a SiLi detector for microanalyses. The matrix was predominantly γ (TiAl with L10 structure) and α2(TisAl with DO 19 structure) phases with various morphologies shown in figure 1.

Abstract Water lubricated guide bearings for hydro turbines and pumps are conventionally designed with multiple axial grooves to provide effectively cooling and flushing away abrasives. Due to the variety of groove configuration in terms of number and size, a predication of their performance is difficult. This paper deals with an analytical procedure to investigate groove effect on load capacity, stiffness and damping for this type of bearing where it is considered as an assembly of many inclined slide bearings. The result can be applied to bearings made of hard materials combined with low bearing pressure.

Although research on various diamond polishing techniques has been carried for years, some issues still need to be examined in order to facilitate application on large areas in a cost-efficient manner. A compositive technique for machining efficiently thick diamond films prepared by DC plasma arc jet is reported in the present paper. A two-stage polishing was applied on thick polycrystalline diamond films, by employing first electro-discharge machining (EDM) for rough polishing and subsequently mechanical polishing for finishing operations. Experimental results obtained clearly indicate the applicability of the proposed two-stage technique for fabricating transparent diamond films that can be used for the production of X-ray windows. Appropriate etching with EDM is an effective pretreatment method for enhancing the efficiency of rough polishing process in mechanical polishing of thick diamond film. The machined surfaces of diamond films are studied by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Raman Scattering Spectroscopy (Raman).
