Nowadays the five-axis machine tool is one of the most important foundations of manufacturing industry. To guarantee the accuracy of the complex surface machining, multi-axis linkage performance detection and compensation of five-axis machine tools is necessary. RTCP (Rotation Tool Center Point) is one of the basic essential functions for the five-axis machine tools, which can keep the tool center with the machining trajectory when five axes move synchronously. On the basis of RTCP function, a way to detect multi-axes linkage performance of five-axis machine tools is briefly introduced, and linkage error model is built in accordance with the topological structure of machine tool. Based on the feature of the linkage errors of the five-axis machine tool, the error tracing and compensation method is proposed. Some simulations and experiments that verify the error tracing method could locate the linkage error category are established. Therefore, a new attempt to detect and compensate the linkage error of the five-axis machine tool is provided in this paper.

Technology development trends towards the ability to manufacture ever smaller parts and feature sizes with increased precision and decreased cost. Micro machining is one of the important manufacturing methods to fulfill the requirements from the industry. The objective of this paper is to develop an on-machine error measurement system that can identify the micro machining errors for error compensation so that the machining accuracy of a meso-scale machine tool (mMT) can be enhanced. Because of the difficulty in handling and repositioning the miniature workpiece, the error measurement system should be non-contact and on-machine executable. To meet this requirement, a vision-based error measurement system integrating image re-constructive technology, camera pixel correction, and model comparison algorithm error was developed in this study. The proposed measurement system consists of a CCD with CCTV lens, a precision 3-DOF platform, image re-construction sub-system, and contour error calculation sub-system. By adopting Canny Edge Detection algorithm and camera pixel calibration method, the contour of a machined workpiece can be identified and compared to the pixel-based theoretical contour model of the workpiece to determine the micro machining errors. Because the system does not have to remove the machined workpiece from the CNC machine tool, errors due to re-installing and re-positioning can be avoided. To prove the feasibility of the developed algorithm and system, measurement results obtained from the vision-based measurement system were compared with the measurements of CMM, and error compensation experiment conducted on a 3-DOF mMT was also conducted. The results have shown the good feasibility and effectiveness of the developed system.

Multi-axis Laser Engraving Machine Tools (LEMT) are widely used in precision processing of parts with complex surface. The accuracy of kinematic model and parameter measurement are the key factors determining the processing quality of LEMT. In this paper, a kinematic model of multi-axis LEMT was established based on Homogeneous Transformation Matrix (HTM). Two types of unknown parameters, linkage parameters and positioning parameters, were measured in the presented model. Taking advantage of the characteristics of laser processing, this paper proposed a rapid measurement method of linkage parameters by combining the machine tool motion with the laser marking action. For positioning parameters, this study proposed a non-contact measurement method based on structured light scanner, which can obtain the translation values and the rotation values from the Workpiece Coordinate System (WCS) to the Basic Coordinate System (BCS) simultaneously. After the measurement of two kinds of parameters of a multi-axis LEMT was completed, the processing of a spatial curve was performed and the average contour error was controlled at 15.1 µm, which is sufficient to meet the project requirements.

The plasma polymerization replica method and its apparatus have been devised by Tanaka (1-3). We have published several reports on its application: surface replicas of biological and inorganic specimens, replicas of freeze-fractured tissues and metal-extraction replicas with immunocytochemical markers. The apparatus for plasma polymerization consists of a high voltage power supply, a vacuum chamber containing a hydrocarbon gas (naphthalene, methane, ethylene), and electrodes of an anode disk and a cathode of the specimen base. The surface replication by plasma polymerization in negative glow phase on the cathode was carried out by gassing at 0.05-0.1 Torr and glow discharging at 1.5-3 kV D.C. Ionized hydrocarbon molecules diffused into complex surface configurations and deposited as a three-dimensionally polymerized film of 1050 nm in thickness. The resulting film on the complex surface had uniform thickness and showed no granular texture. Since the film was chemically inert, resistant to heat and mecanically strong, it could be treated with almost any organic or inorganic solvents.
