This paper describes the reconfiguration of molecular tunneling junctions during operation via the self-assembly of bilayers of glycol ethers. We use well-established functional groups to modulate the magnitude and direction of rectification in assembled tunneling junctions by exposing them to solutions containing different glycol ethers. Variable-temperature measurements establish that rectification occurs by a bias-dependent tunneling-hopping mechanism and that glycol ethers, beside being an unusually efficient tunneling medium, behave identically to alkanes. We fabricated memory bits from crossbar junctions prepared by injecting eutectic Ga-In into microfluidic channels. Two 8-bit registers were able to perform logical AND operations on bit strings encoded into chemical packets as microfluidic droplets that alter the composition of the crossbar junctions through self-assembly to effect memristor-like properties. This proof of concept work demonstrates the potential for fieldable molecular-electronic devices based on tunneling junctions of self-assembled monolayers and bilayers.

We report on the modification of the electric properties of the imidazolium-based [BMIM][NTf2] ionic liquid upon surface confinement in the sub-monolayer regime. Solid-like insulating nanostructures of [BMIM][NTf2] spontaneously form on a variety of insulating substrates, at odd with the liquid and conductive nature of the same substances in the bulk phase. A systematic spatially resolved investigation by atomic force microscopy of the morphological, mechanical and electrical properties of [BMIM][NTf2] nanostructures showed that this liquid substance rearranges into lamellar nanostructures with a high degree of vertical order and enhanced resistance to mechanical compressive stresses and very intense electric fields, denoting a solid-like character. The morphological and structural reorganization has a profound impact on the electric properties of supported [BMIM][NTf2] islands, which behave like insulator layers with a relative dielectric constant between 3 and 5, comparable to those of conventional ionic solids, and significantly smaller than those measured in the bulk ionic liquid. These results suggest that in the solid-like ordered domains confined either at surfaces or inside the pores of the nanoporous electrodes of photo-electrochemical devices, the ionic mobility and the overall electrical properties can be significantly perturbed with respect to the bulk liquid phase, which would likely influence the
performance of the devices.
Abstract Conventional wastewater parameters are accepted as inadequate estimates of the condition of activated sludge but numerous other indices have been suggested as specific measurements of the activity and viability of the biomass. Literature in the related fields of microbiology and biochemistry were reviewed in order to select the most appropriate activity parameters for application to a heterogeneous biological material. Modified analytical methods were applied to a well-controlled biological system containing a single predominant bacterial species to evaluate the relative merit of each as an indicator of viability and activity. The potential of each parameter in a complex heterogeneous system was determined by monitoring each index in a bench activated sludge system. The predominant culture studies indicated that the ATP content of the biomass and the dehydrogenase activity were potential indicators of cell viability in a simple system. However, in the complex activated sludge system, only the ATP content showed significant correlation to the organic carbon removal rate.
