Modern infrared imagers often rely on the split Stirling cryogenic coolers the linear compressors of which are the well-known sources of harmonic disturbance. The traditional method of their passive isolation fails to meet the restraints on the static and dynamic deflections which are originated by the combined action of the airborne g-loading and harsh random vibration. The vibration protection system, which combines a stiff and heavily damped vibration isolator with tuned dynamic absorber, is studied and optimised for use in the design of an airborne infrared device.Such a design is aimed, primarily, at essential dynamic suppression of the harmonic force which is produced by the linear compressor and, secondarily, at minimisation of environmental vibration loads transmitted through the infrared device to the linear compressor. Experimental testing backed up the theoretical results.

Abstract In order to reach the inside surfaces of some workpieces, a prototype for milling extension is developed. The milling extension has a low static stiffness and is prone to machine tool chatter, therefore vibration control in this type of machining is of importance. The paper proposes the application of an active dynamic absorber to the milling process. A finite element model for the milling extension with consideration of the cutting dynamics is developed. An annular ring serving as the dynamic absorber mass is connected to the main system through active force generating systems which are piezoelectric translators functioning as actuators. The annular ring and the actuators are functioning as an active dynamic absorber in the theory to suppress the vibration of the milling system. Optimal control algorithms are used to calculate the Kalman feedback control for the equivalent lumped-mass milling structure model. Transient responses of the system are obtained. Oscillation of the milling extension equipped with the active dynamic absorber is attenuated appreciably, therefore the surface finish of a workpiece is improved. Harmonic responses are also obtained with and without the feedback control to show the superiority of the active control technique. A proof-of-concept experiment is designed and conducted to verify the theoretical prediction. Comparisons between the simulation and experimental results are made.

The motion of a particular degree-of-freedom in a harmonically excited conservative system can be vanished by attaching an appropriate dynamic absorber to it. It is shown here that under certain conditions, which are characterized in the paper, the steady state motion of a damped system may be completely absorbed, without loss of stability, by active control implementing a single sensor and an actuator. The results are established theoretically and they are demonstrated by means of analytical examples. [S0739-3717(00)02104-8]

Vibrations are usually undesired phenomena as they may cause discomfort, disturbance, damage, and sometimes destruction of machines and structures. It must be reduced or controlled or eliminated. One of the most common methods of vibration control is the use of the dynamic absorber. The paper is interested in the study of a nonlinear two degrees of freedom (DOF) model. To solve nonlinear equation of motion a high order implicit algorithm is proposed. It is based on the introduction of a homotopy, an implicit scheme of Newmark and the use of techniques of Asymptotic Numerical method (ANM). We propose also a regularization of the contact force to overcome the difficulty of the singularity in this model. A comparison will be presented between the results obtained by the proposed algorithm and those using the classical Newton–Raphson and Newmark time scheme.
