In this paper we consider the problem of ultrasound tomography. Recently, an increased interest in ultrasound tomography has been caused by non-invasiveness of the method and increased detection accuracy (as compared to radiation tomography), and also ultrasound tomography does not put at risk human health. We study possibilities of detection of specific areas and determining their density using ultrasound tomography data. The process of image reconstruction based on ultrasound data is computationally complex and time consuming. It contains the following parts: calculation of the time-of-flight (TOF) of a signal, detection of specific areas, calculation of density of specific areas. The calculation of the arrival time of a signal is a very important part, because the errors in the calculation of quantities strongly influence the total problem solution. We offer ultrasound imaging reconstruction technology that can be easily parallelized. The whole process is described: from extracting the arrival times of signals raw data feeding from physical receivers to obtaining the desired results.

This paper concerns the inspection of steel plates, with particular emphasis on the assessment of increasing damage. Non-destructive tests were performed on four plates, one of which was undamaged, while the remaining three had defects in the form of circular holes with diameters of 2, 5 and 10 cm. Guided Lamb waves were used in the research, and the image reconstruction was performed using ultrasound computed tomography. The damage size was estimated by tracking the real course of rays and densifying the pixel grid into which the object was divided. The results showed the great potential of ultrasound tomography in detecting defects in steel elements, together with the possibility of estimating damage size.

An image reconstruction method is proposed based on Lagrange-Newton method for electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and ultrasound tomography (UT) dual-modality imaging. Since the change in conductivity distribution is usually accompanied with the change in acoustic impedance distribution, the reconstruction targets of EIT and UT are unified to the conductivity difference using the same mesh model. Some background medium distribution information obtained from ultrasound transmission and reflection measurements can be used to construct a hard constraint about the conductivity difference distribution. Then, the EIT/UT dual-modality inverse problem is constructed by an equality constraint equation, and the Lagrange multiplier method combining Newton-Raphson iteration is used to solve the EIT/UT dual-modality inverse problem. The numerical and experimental results show that the proposed dual-modality image reconstruction method has a better performance than the single-modality EIT method and is more robust to the measurement noise.
