Nowadays, numerous devices to manipulate high frequencies for various applications are rapidly being investigated. Among them, nano-antennas for energy harvesting application at thermal radiation spectrum received most attention. A potential of versatile rectangular patch with perturbation slit tunnel that can collect electrical field energy is studied. The antenna performances are defined over field strength and current responses. The electrical field concentrated at the slit junction can be tuned by verifying the perturbation slit parameters. The electrical field amplitude of approximately 110 V/m is achieved with slit length of 1.0 µm. The field then can be guided out through the tunnel with some amplitude degradation in order to be integrated with metal-insulator-metal diode for energy conversion. The diode current obtained inside the insulator layer is compared with published results and it performs outstandingly. It was found that the proposed antenna exhibits promising performances that is suitable as an efficient energy harvesting device.

This work presents the design and analysis of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM)-based optical log spiral rectenna for efficient energy harvesting at 28.3 THz. To maximize the benefits of the enhanced field of the proposed nano-antenna in the rectification process, the proposed design considers the antenna arms (Au) as the electrodes of the rectifying diode and the insulator is placed between the electrode terminals for the compact design of the horizontal MIM rectenna. The rectifier insulator, Al2O3, was inserted at the hotspot located in the gap between the antennas. A detailed analysis of the effect of different symmetric and asymmetric MIM-configurations (Au-Al2O3-Ag, Au-Al2O3-Al, Au-Al2O3-Cr, Au-Al2O3-Cu, and Au-Al2O3-Ti) was conducted. The results of the study suggested that the asymmetric configuration of Au-Al2O3-Ag provides optimal results. The proposed design benefits from the captured E-field intensity, I-V, resistivity, and responsivity and results in a rectenna that performs efficiently.

Influence of insulator layer width on propagation properties of symmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode, which is excited through a dipole embedded in SiO2 layer of Au/SiO2/Au structure in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide, has been investigated. The symmetric SPP mode has a propagation length along SiO2/Au interface that depends on SiO2 layer width. Its maximal value is 0.61 μm with SiO2 layer width of 100 nm. These values provide a theoretical reference for designing a high-performance SPP source using Au/SiO2/Au structure.

Abstract We proposed surface-plasmon-coupled optical force sensors based on metal–insulator–metal (MIM) metamaterials with a movable air gap as an insulator layer. The MIM metamaterial was composed of an air gap sandwiched by a metal nanodot array and a metal diaphragm, the resonant wavelength of which was red-shifted when the air gap was narrowed by applying a normal force. We designed and fabricated a prototype of the proposed sensor and confirmed that the MIM metamaterial could be used as a force sensor with larger sensitivity than a force sensor based on Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI).
