Light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has a spatial distribution of intensity and phase, which attracts considerable interest regarding several potential applications in optical and quantum scenarios recently. Spiral phase plates are commonly used elements for generating and analyzing OAM states. In this study, we put forward a method of directly writing binary multi-sector phase plates using the femtosecond laser. These phase plates are engraved on fused silica, which could be applied in high-intensity regimes. Different binary multi-sector phase plates were generated with high quality, which were proved by the observation of their structures, accompanied by detecting the beam patterns with the Gaussian beams. The proposed method provides a crucial basis for the rapid manufacturing of phase plates using convenient equipment, which can generate the superposition OAM states and may lead to the capability of measuring the high-dimensional entanglement.

Recently, there has been increased interest in the shaping of light fields with an inverse energy flux to guide optically trapped nano- and microparticles towards a radiation source. To generate inverse energy flux, non-uniformly polarized laser beams, especially higher-order cylindrical vector beams, are widely used. Here, we demonstrate the use of conventional and so-called generalized spiral phase plates for the formation of light fields with an inverse energy flux when they are illuminated with linearly polarized radiation. We present an analytical and numerical study of the longitudinal and transverse components of the Poynting vector. The conditions for maximizing the negative value of the real part of the longitudinal component of the Poynting vector are obtained.

Computer-aided design software and additive manufacturing provide flexibility for the direct fabrication of multi-material devices. This design and fabrication versatility has been investigated for the manufacture of dielectric spiral phase plates (SPP) that generate electromagnetic waves with helical wavefronts. Three types of SPPs designed to produce an orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode number l = |1| were additively manufactured using material extrusion and polyjet fabrication methods. The OAM mode characteristics of the transformed helical microwaves as a function of the SPP geometrical features were investigated experimentally in the 12–18 GHz frequency range. The SPPs were further combined with an additively manufactured dielectric lens that provided a marked improvement in OAM mode purity. Finally, multiplexing and de-multiplexing of two OAM modes were demonstrated successfully using an optimum SPP geometry and arrangement.
