A technique for rapidly determining Monod and inhibition kinetic parameters in activated sludge is evaluated. The method studied is known as the fed-batch reactor technique and requires approximately three hours to complete. The technique allows for a gradual build-up of substrate in the test reactor by introducing the substrate at a feed rate greater than the maximum substrate utilization rate. Both inhibitory and non-inhibitory substrate responses are modeled using a nonlinear numerical curve-fitting technique. The responses of both glucose and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) are studied using activated sludges with various acclimation histories. Statistically different inhibition constants, KI, for DCP inhibition of glucose utilization were found for the various sludges studied. The curve-fitting algorithm was verified in its ability to accurately retrieve two kinetic parameters from synthetic data generated by superimposing normally distributed random error onto the two parameter numerical solution generated by the algorithm.

A high-speed, high-resolution swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) is presented for focusing lens imaging and a k-domain uniform algorithm is adopted to find the wave number phase equalization. The radius of curvature of the laser focusing lens was obtained using a curve-fitting algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the measuring accuracy of the proposed SS-OCT system is higher than the laser confocal microscope. The SS-OCT system has great potential for surface topography measurement and defect inspection of the focusing lens.

Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) of distributed optical fiber sensor is extracted from the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS), which is often characterized by Lorenz type. However, in the case of complex stress and optical fiber self damage, the BGS will deviate from Lorenz type and be asymmetric, which leads to the extraction error of BFS. In order to enhance the extraction accuracy of BFS, the Lorenz local single peak fitting algorithm was developed to fit the Brillouin gain spectrum curve, which can make the BSG symmetrical with respect to the Brillouin center frequency shift. One temperature test of a fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) packaged sensor whose BSG curve is asymmetric was conducted to verify the idea. The results show that the local region curve of BSG processed by the developed algorithm has good symmetry, and the temperature measurement accuracy obtained by the developed algorithm is higher than that directly measured by demodulation equipment. Comparison with the reference temperature, the relative measurement error measured by the developed algorithm and BOTDA are within 4% and 8%, respectively.

Abstract Statistical studies of exoplanets and the properties of their host stars have been critical to informing models of planet formation. Numerous trends have arisen in particular from the rich Kepler dataset, including that exoplanets are more likely to be found around stars with a high metallicity and the presence of a “gap” in the distribution of planetary radii at 1.9 R⊕. Here we present a new analysis on the Kepler field, using the APOGEE spectroscopic survey to build a metallicity calibration based on Gaia, 2MASS and Strömgren photometry. This calibration, along with masses and radii derived from a Bayesian isochrone fitting algorithm, is used to test a number of these trends with unbiased, photometrically derived parameters, albeit with a smaller sample size in comparison to recent studies. We recover that planets are more frequently found around higher metallicity stars; over the entire sample, planetary frequencies are 0.88 ± 0.12 percent for [Fe/H] < 0 and 1.37 ± 0.16 percent for [Fe/H] ≥ 0 but at two sigma we find that the size of exoplanets influences the strength of this trend. We also recover the planet radius gap, along with a slight positive correlation with stellar mass. We conclude that this method shows promise to derive robust statistics of exoplanets. We also remark that spectrophotometry from Gaia DR3 will have an effective resolution similar to narrow band filters and allow to overcome the small sample size inherent in this study.

Projectors have become a widespread tool to share information in Human-Robot Interaction with large groups of people in a comfortable way. Finding a suitable vertical surface becomes a problem when the projector changes positions when a mobile robot is looking for suitable surfaces to project. Two problems must be addressed to achieve a correct undistorted image: (i) finding the biggest suitable surface free from obstacles and (ii) adapting the output image to correct the distortion due to the angle between the robot and a nonorthogonal surface. We propose a RANSAC-based method that detects a vertical plane inside a point cloud. Then, inside this plane, we apply a rectangle-fitting algorithm over the region in which the projector can work. Finally, the algorithm checks the surface looking for imperfections and occlusions and transforms the original image using a homography matrix to display it over the area detected. The proposed solution can detect projection areas in real-time using a single Kinect camera, which makes it suitable for applications where a robot interacts with other people in unknown environments. Our Projection Surfaces Detector and the Image Correction module allow a mobile robot to find the right surface and display images without deformation, improving its ability to interact with people.
