Abstract Dopant profile inspection is one of the focused ion beam (FIB) physical analysis applications. This paper presents a technique for characterizing P-V dopant regions in silicon by using a FIB methodology. This technique builds on published work for backside FIB navigation, in which n-well contrast is observed. The paper demonstrates that the technique can distinguish both n- and p-type dopant regions. The capability for imaging real sample dopant regions on current fabricated devices is also demonstrated. SEM DC and FIB DC are complementary methodologies for the inspection of dopants. The advantage of the SEM DC method is high resolution and the advantage of FIB DC methodology is high contrast, especially evident in a deep N-well region.

Rapidly developing augmented reality, solid-state light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and holographic display technologies require spatial light modulators (SLMs) with high resolution and viewing angle to satisfy increasing customer demands. Performance of currently available SLMs is limited by their large pixel sizes on the order of several micrometers. Here, we propose a concept of tunable dielectric metasurfaces modulated by liquid crystal, which can provide abrupt phase change, thus enabling pixel-size miniaturization. We present a metasurface-based transmissive SLM, configured to generate active beam steering with >35% efficiency and a large beam deflection angle of 11°. The high resolution and steering angle obtained provide opportunities to develop the next generation of LIDAR and display technologies.

Abstract We describe a simple, rapid, and inexpensive unidimensional high-resolution thin-layer chromatographic procedure for screening for aminoacidopathies in newborns. Protein-free filtrates are prepared for ultrafiltration of as little as 10 µl of plasma. A rapid, inexpensive photographic method provides large, high-contrast pictures of the chromatograms for permanent records. A day’s samples can be completed in 3 h, including all phases of the procedure.

Abstract We reported on GaN microcavity (MC) lasers combined with one rigid TiO2 high-contrast grating (HCG) structure as the output mirror. The HCG structure was directly fabricated on the GaN structure without an airgap. The entire MC structure comprised a bottom dielectric distributed Bragg reflector; a GaN cavity; and a top HCG reflector, which was designed to yield high reflectance for transverse magnetic (TM)- or transverse electric (TE)-polarized light. The MC device revealed an operation threshold of approximately 0.79 MW/cm2 when pulsed optical pumping was conducted using the HCG structure at room temperature. The laser emission was TM polarized with a degree of polarization of 99.2% and had a small divergence angle of 14° (full width at half maximum). This laser operation demonstration for the GaN-based MC structure employing an HCG exhibited the advantages of HCGs in semiconductor lasers at wavelengths from green to ultraviolet.
