A robust scheme to estimate a set of models for a linear time-invariant system, subject to perturbations in the physical parameters, from a frequency response data record is proposed. The true model as well as the disturbances affecting the system are assumed unknown. However, the physical parameters are assumed to enter the coefficients of the system transfer function multilinearly. A set of models is identified by perturbing the physical parameters one-at-time and using a frequency domain identification technique. Exploiting the assumed multilinearity, the estimated set of models is validated. The proposed scheme is evaluated on a number of simulated systems, and on a physical robot manipulator arm.

Geometric motion error measurement has been considered as an important task for accuracy enhancement and quality assurance of NC machine tools and CMMs. In consideration of the disadvantages of traditional measuring methods, such as Laser interferometer and Double Ball Bar method, a new measuring method for motion accuracy of 3-axis NC equipments based on composite trajectory including circle and non-circle (straight line and/or polygonal line) is proposed. The principles and techniques of the new measuring method are discussed in detail. 8 feasible measuring strategies based on different measuring groupings are summarized and optimized. The experiment of the most preferable strategy is carried out on the 3-axis CNC vertical machining center Cincinnati 750 Arrow by using cross grid encoder. The whole measuring time of 21 error components of the new method is cut down to 1–2 h because of easy installation, adjustment, operation and the characteristics of non-contact measurement. Result shows that the new method is suitable for ‘on machine’ measurement and has good prospects of wide application.

Motion Error Compensation

Servo systems of NC machine tools must minimize trajectory control tracking error by preventing machine resonance and trajectory error between forward and backward paths by improving symmetry. To address such issues, we propose two-degree-of-freedom control using a reference model and a servo control method with the mechanical-characteristics-compensator to compensate for machine vibration. Results of experiments confirmed the effectiveness of our proposed control.

This paper describes a method of measuring and analyzing the motion accuracy of NC machine tools. A practical method of measuring the motion accuracy is required for the achievement of high precision machining. The motion accuracy of NC machine tools becomes an issue, as motion error emerges while a continuous path control is applied. Error is caused by several factors. In order to determine the effects of each cause, it is necessary to measure the differences among reference positions, feedback positions, and tool tip positions. Thus, a system of measurement that achieves synchronized acquisition of each of the aforementioned positions has been developed. The system is composed of the NC system, which can manage the reference position and the feedback position, and an additional sensor data acquisition system, which receives the tool tip position. A method of analyzing the acquired data to determine the motion accuracy is also proposed. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
