We propose a scheme for realizing negative refractive index in a multilevel atomic system. The theoretical modeling has been done using density matrix approach in which the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is also induced. It is shown that the negative refractive index can be obtained on the effect of quantum coherence. The parameters () quantifying left-handedness in the system become more negative if the SGC is defined in the appropriate value. Furthermore, left-handed material with reduced absorption is possible by choosing appropriate parameters.

We investigated the spectral properties of a new class of nanostructured artificial composite materials with tailored electromagnetic response, i.e. negative refractive index materials, also known as "left-handed" metamaterials. We analyzed structures incorporating both ordinary positive index media and negative refractive index metamaterials where the interface may be graded to an arbitrary degree. Utilizing a modified version of the Rosen-Morse function, we derived analytical expressions for the field intensity and spectral reflection and transmission through a graded interface between positive and negative index materials. We compared our results to numerical solutions obtained using the transfer matrix technique. .

In this paper, we theoretically analyze the electromagnetic properties of a negative refractive index medium configured as a four-level system under thermal bath effect. For different thermal bath coupling strengths, the system shows negative permittivity and permeability as well as a large negative refractive index. This atomic medium is stable against environmental effect in a large experimental reachable domain of parameters which makes it a potential candidate for important applications.

In this work, the concept of mass-energy equivalence in left-handed metamaterials is discussed by following Einstein's box thought experiment. Left-handed metamaterials are artificial composite structures that exhibit unusual properties, especially negative refractive index, in which phase and group velocities are directed oppositely. Equation E = mc2 assumes that, in vacuum, the propagation of an electromagnetic radiation from emitter to receiver is accompanied by the transfer of mass. It was hypothesized previously that if the space between emitter and receiver is medium with a negative refractive index, then radiation transfers the mass not from the emitter to receiver as expected, but rather from the receiver to the emitter due to the opposite directions of phase and group velocities. In this paper, it is shown that even though one radiating atom is taken, the negative mass transferring must be in force. In particular, it means that, if the atom radiates a photon in a medium with negative refractive index, photon transfers the mass not from the atom, but to the atom.

AbstractWe report a true left-handed (LH) behavior and focusing in a composite metamaterial consisting of periodically arranged split ring resonator (SRR) and wire structures. The magnetic resonance of the SRR structure is demonstrated by comparing the transmission spectra of SRRs with that of closed SRRs. We confirmed experimentally that the effective plasma frequency of the LH material composed of SRRs and wires is lower than the plasma frequency of the wires. A well-defined left-handed transmission band with a peak value of -1.2 dB (–0.3 dB/cm) is obtained. We also report the transmission characteristics of a 2D composite metamaterial (CMM) structure in free space. At the frequencies where left-handed transmission takes place, we experimentally confirmed that the CMM structure has effective negative refractive index. Phase shift between consecutive numbers of layers of CMM is measured and phase velocity is shown to be negative at the relevant frequency range. Refractive index values obtained from the refraction experiments and the phase measurements are in good agreement and the experimental results agree extremely well with the theoretical calculations. By measuring the refracted electromagnetic (EM) waves from a LHM slab, we found an effective refractive index of -1.86. A 2D scanning transmission measurement technique was used to measure the intensity distribution of the electromagnetic (EM) waves that radiate from the point source. The flat lens behavior of a 2D CMM slab was demonstrated for two different point source distances of ds = 0.5ë and ë. The full width at half maximum of the focused beams is 0.36ë and 0.4ë, respectively, which are both below the diffraction limit.

This chapter evaluates the simulation studies performed on resonator-based structures to figure out the characteristics of metamaterial arrangement while incident the light horizontally. A double negative material is shown by the proposed structure as light hits along x-axis. Furthermore, it is noticed that different parameters of the structures effect the behavior of the left-handed metamaterial. Moreover, it is also noticed that changing the lattice constant ax and ay also affects the behavior of the left-handed metamaterial.
