A remarkable new species of Hungarobelbidae (Acari: Oribatida) exhibiting characteristic features of two genera, with notes on its systematic relationships

The oribatid mite family Hungarobelbidae is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere, but has been represented by only two genera and eight known species. Herein, we propose a remarkable new species, Hungarobelba nortonroyi sp. nov. based on adults from western USA, exhibiting curious mixtures of character states of both genera of this family, Costeremus and Hungarobelba. Based on available data, we assess current views of the family-level classification of Costeremus rejecting its placement in Damaeolidae, and a close relationship is suggested between Costeremus and Hungarobelba. Also, recent transfer of the damaeid genus Tokukobelba to Hungarobelbidae is reversed, as there are no synapomorphies linking the latter two taxa. Furthermore, a brief note on habitat ecology and biogeography of hitherto know species is given, and a key for the identification of adults of the known genera and species of Hungarobelbidae in the world, is provided.

The oribatid mite family Astegistidae is represented in Mongolia by four species in two genera. A new species, Cultroribula taigagica sp. nov., collected from cool temperate forests in Northern Mongolia is described based on adults. In addition, three known species, Astegistes pilosus (C.L. Koch, 1840), Cultroribula dentata Willmann, 1950 and Cultroribula vtorovi Krivolutsly, 1971 are recorded for the first time from Mongolia, which are redescribed along with data on their distribution and ecology. A key to Mongolian species of Astegistidae is given.

The oribatid mite family Liacaridae (Acari, Oribatida) is recorded in Vietnam for the first time. Two new species of liacarids of the genera Liacarus and Xenillus are described from Tam Dao National Park, northern Vietnam. Liacarus vietnamensis sp. nov. is similar to L. laterostris Mihelčič, 1954 in the morphology of lamellar cusps (inner teeth well-developed; interlamellar tubercle absent) and in having long interlamellar setae and short notogastral setae, but differs by the directions of lamellar cusps and morphology of bothridial setae. Xenillus tamdaoensis sp. nov. is similar to X. longipilus Pérez-Íñigo & Peña, 1995 in having long notogastral setae, insertion of notogastral setae lm posterior to la, and the presence of an interlamellar tubercle, but differs by the morphology and position of lamellar cusps, size of the interlamellar tubercle and length of interlamellar setae.

Neopilizetes is a genus of the oribatid mite family Galumnidae that was first characterized by having well-developed setae, a dorsosejugal suture, and raised striae on the prodorsum and notogaster. It was proposed to accommodate Pilizetes neotropicus Balogh & Mahunka 1978 from Brazil—the only supposed Pilizetes species known outside the Ethiopian Region—and it has remained monotypic. We found adults of N. neotropicus and four related species in soil–litter interface samples of a single cacao plantation in Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. Herein we: redescribe N. neotropicus; describe Neopilizetes thoracicus n. sp., Neopilizetes tigris n. sp., Neopilizetes triumnasus n. sp. and Neopilizetes unumnasus n. sp., and use this information to develop a new concept and expanded diagnosis of Neopilizetes. A key to the five species is provided, and we offer reasons for rejecting the classification of Neopilizetes as a subgenus of Pilizetes.

AbstractSome 35 species (mostly Neotropical, 22 new) of acalypterate flies representing 17 genera (3 new) in six families, as follows, are treated: Family Cypselosomatidae. One species from Nepal, Cypselosoma gephyrae Hendel (?), is discussed.Family Pseudopomyzidae. The classification of the family is reviewed, and a key to the world genera is provided. The genus Latheticomyia Wheeler is placed here for the first time, and two new species, L. longiterebra (Peru) and L. rotundicornis (Mexico), are described. Two new genera, Pseudopomyzella and Rhinopomyzella, are erected for three new species, P. flava (Peru), R. albimana (Brazil), and R. nigrimana (Brazil).Family Periscelidae. The genus Periscelis Loew is recorded from Mexico and Peru. Neoscutops peruvianus and Scutops striatus, both from Peru, are described as new.Family Aulacigastridae. The classification of the family is reviewed and a key to the world genera is provided. One new species of Cephodapedon Malloch, C. nigriventer (Chile), is described. The genera Mayomyia Malloch and Cinderella Steyskal are reviewed and placed in this family for the first time. Four species of Cinderella, C. macalpinei (Ecuador), C. pollinosa (Chile), C. hirsuta (Chile), and C. steyskali are described as new.The paper is accompanied by 72 illustrations.

The oribatid mite genus Caleremaeus (Caleremaeidae) is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere but has been represented by only three extant and one fossil species. We redescribe the North American C. retractus (Banks, 1947) based on adults and nymphs; it is distinguishable from the European type species, C. monilipes (Michael, 1882) by its smaller adult size and minor differences in cuticular structure, and by the elongated, tapered form of seta h1 in nymphs. Two new species are proposed: C. nasutus n. sp. from forest soil in Alabama is unique in having adults with a large anterior rostral lobe (juveniles unknown) bearing lamellar setae; the arboreal C. arboricolus n. sp. from eastern USA and Canada is unique among described extant species in having adults with femoral saccules, a transverse ridge bearing lamellar setae and relatively large notogastral setae, and juveniles with a bothridial seta similar to that of the adult. Based on all available data, Caleremaeus is redescribed and considered the sole genus in Caleremaeidae. The higher classification of the family is reviewed, and past placement in Ameroidea is rejected in favor of the monofamilial Caleremaeoidea.

The nomenclature and identity of Chiropsalmus quadrigatus have been extensively confused. Originally described from Rangoon, Burma, based on an immature and badly damaged specimen, subsequent Philippine and Australian redescriptions do not match primary characters of the holotype. This has led to widespread messiness in identification and classification of this and related species. In order to clarify the nomenclature of the Chiropsalmus-type cubomedusae, a preliminary revision of the Chiropsalmidae is given. Chiropsoides quadrigatus comb. nov. is proposed, in order to reflect the close relationship of this taxon with Chiropsoides buitendijki, based on the shared character of linear-branching pedalia. A common Australian form, often attributed to Chiropsalmus quadrigatus, is herein described as a new genus and species, Chiropsella bronzie. This new form differs from other Chirodropida in having sessile, solid, smooth gastric saccules, whereas in other Chirodropida these structures are pendant whether they are smooth or branched. This new species is not dangerous to humans. Another form, Chiropsalmus alipes n. sp., is described from the Pacific coast of southern Mexico; this new species differs from others in having long, blade-like pedalia similar to those of the Carybdeida, only four tentacles at maturity per pedalium, each branching in a different direction, and a warty body; comments are made regarding its apparent relationship to the enigmatic Chiropsalmus zygonema. The recently described Chiropsalmus maculatus is moved to a new genus, Chirodectes in the family Chirodropidae.

The diversity and phylogenetic relationships of calcareous sponges are still not completely understood. Recent integrative approaches combined analyses of DNA and morphological observations. Such studies resulted in severe taxonomic revisions within the subclass Calcinea and provided the foundation for a phylogenetically meaningful classification. However, several genera are missing from DNA phylogenies and their relationship to other Calcinea remain uncertain. One of these genera is Leuclathrina (family Leucaltidae). We here describe a new species from the Maldives, Leuclathrina translucida sp. nov., which is only the second species of the genus. Like the type species Leuclathrina asconoides, the new species has a leuconoid aquiferous system and lacks a specialized choanoskeleton. Phylogenetic analyses of the partial 28S ribosomal RNA gene revealed that L. translucida sp. nov. is most closely related to a clade containing the exclusively asconoid genera Ascandra, Levinella and Soleneiscus, and to a clade of the likewise asconoid genus Ernstia. No close relationship exists to other members of the polyphyletic family Leucaltidae, or to any other leuconoid Calcinea. Our results suggest that the leuconoid aquiferous system of Leuclathrina evolved independently from that of other calcineans and that the family assignment of the genus has to be reconsidered. Because the latter requires a more comprehensive family level revision among many genera of Calcinea, we propose to formally retain the genus in Leucaltidae for the time being.

Abstract This study reinforces and extends the findings of previous molecular studies showing that there is a close relationship between species assigned to the sponge genera Halicnemia, Higginsia, Paratimea and Stelligera and that the family Heteroxyidae is polyphyletic. The present study has led to the description of one new species of Halicnemia and six new species of Paratimea, the resurrection of Halicnemia gallica and a better understanding of the characters uniting Stelligeridae. A new species of Heteroxya is also described. We demonstrate that many of the taxa assigned to Heteroxyidae are more closely related to other families, and we propose several changes to the classification of Heteroscleromorpha. Desmoxyidae is resurrected from synonymy and transferred to Poecilosclerida; Higginsia anfractuosa is transferred to Hymedesmiidae, and a new genus, Hooperia, is erected for its reception; Higginsia durissima is returned to Bubaris (Bubaridae); Higginsia fragilis is transferred to Spanioplon (Hymedesmiidae); Hemiasterella camelus is transferred to Paratimea; and Raspailia (Parasyringella) australiensis and Ceratopsion axiferum are transferred to Adreus (Hemiasterellidae).

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

The family Tenuipalpidae from Greece is revised and keys to the Greek species of the gene­ra Aegyptobia, Brevipalpus, Cenopalpus, Pentamerismus and Tenuipalpus are provided. A key to the Greek tenuipalpid genera is also given. The species: Aegyptobia leiahensis, Phytoptipaipusparadoxus, Brevipalpus recki, Pentamerismus coronatus, P. juniperi, P. o­regonensis, Pseudoleptus zelihae, Dolichotetranychus floridanus, Raoiella macfarlanei and Obdulia tamaricis are recorded for the first time. Two new species Aegyptobia karys­tensis and Aegyptobia aliartensis are described and illustrated. Hosts, distributional data and relation to hosts are presented for each species. A revaluation of the world genera and subgenera of the Tenuipalpidae is presented.
