Integrating a morphological description with DNA barcode data of a new species of the genus Pimeliaphilus (Acariformes: Pterygosomatidae) with the analysis of its host specificity and a key to the genus

Pimeliaphilus hemidactyli sp. nov., a new species of the mite genus Pimeliaphilus Trägårdh (Acariformes: Pterygosomatidae), is described from four host species of Hemidactylus: H. murrayi Gleadow (type host), H. frenatus Duméril & Bibron, H. parvimaculatus Deraniyagala and H. leschenaultii Duméril & Bibron (Sauria: Gekkonidae) from India. P. hemidactyli sp. nov. is the most similar to P. sharifi Abdussalam, 1941 and P. insignis (Berlese, 1892); this species can be distinguished from P. sharifi by the presence of 11 dorsal setae on the idiosoma, the absence of leg setae v”GII, v”TrIII and the presence of v’TrIV, and from P. sharifi by the presence of 11 dorsal setae on idiosoma, 1 pair of genital setae and the absence of coxal setae 4c. The standard morphological description of the new species is supplemented with sequencing data for cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear ribosomal genes: 18S rDNA and hypervariable region D2 of nuclear 28S rRNA. The present study also addresses specialisation amongst Pimeliaphilus hemidactyli sp. nov. using two measures of host specificity: (1) the number of host species used by the mites species at the study area; and (2) a measure that considers the taxonomic distinctness of the hosts used by the mite, weighted for its prevalence in the different hosts. The results of this study indicate that this species is highly host specific (a stenoxenous species) and that, in the presence of coexisting gecko species, it prefers Murray’s House gecko (H. murrayi) as a host (prevalence of 41%). A historical review of the genus is presented and a key to the genus is constructed.

A new species Calcealges bochkovi sp. n. (Astigmata: Analgoidea) is described from the lowland tiny greenbul Phyllastrephus debilis (Sclater) from Mozambique. This species is close to C. gyroplax Gaud et Mouchet, 1957 described from African bulbuls. Both sexes of these species are very similar in general body shape: in particular, in the form of the epimerites and of the opisthosomal lobes, as well as in the shape of the dorsal shields. The main diagnostic feature of the new species is the striation of dorsal shields, especially pronounced on the prodorsum (in C. gyroplax, these shields lack striae and they are uniformly dotted). The standard morphological description is supplemented by the COI barcode data.

A new species of the orphnine scarab beetle genus Madecorphnus Paulian, 1992, Madecorphnus grebennikovi Frolov, Akhmetova & Vishnevskaya, new species, is described from the Marojejy National Park, Sava Region, northeastern Madagascar. The new species can be distinguished from the congeners by the parameres narrowly rounded in lateral view and having a small but distinct lateral teeth, and by the endophallic armature consisting of 1) a long straight sclerite with attached to its end a 2/3 shorted, somewhat curved sclerite, 2) separate smaller, elongate sclerite, and 3) a rather large area of microspinules. The 811 bp long fragment of the mitochondrial gene COI (DNA barcode) is provided as a part of the diagnosis of the new species. An updated key to the Madecorphnus species is given.

Dichrooscytus fervens Muinonen & Rinne sp. n. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) is described based on material collected in Finland between 2011 and 2018. A morphological description is provided along with DNA barcodes (COI gene) and a phylogeny of all the Dichrooscytus species for which a DNA barcode is available. The new species lives on Picea spp. and is still known only from Finland. A map of all the records is given, as well as an identification key of the Dichrooscytus species occurring in northern Europe.

Abstract During a parasitological survey of fishes at Iguazu National Park, Argentina, specimens belonging to the allocreadiid genus Auriculostoma were collected from the intestine of Characidium heirmostigmata. The erection of the new species is based on a unique combination of morphological traits as well as on phylogenetic analysis. Auriculostoma guacurarii n. sp. resembles four congeneric species – Auriculostoma diagonale, Auriculostoma platense, Auriculostoma tica and Auriculostoma totonacapanensis – in having smooth and oblique testes, but can be distinguished by a combination of several morphological features, hosts association and geographic distribution. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from both A. diagonale and A. platense by the egg size (bigger in the first and smaller in the last); from A. tica by a shorter body length, the genital pore position and the extension of the caeca; and from A. totonacapanensis by the size of the oral and ventral sucker and the post-testicular space. Additionally, one specimen of Auriculostoma cf. stenopteri from the characid Charax stenopterus (Characiformes) from La Plata River, Argentina, was sampled and the partial 28S rRNA gene was sequenced. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. guacurarii n. sp. clustered with A. tica and these two as sister taxa to A. cf. stenopteri. The new species described herein is the tenth species in the genus and the first one parasitizing a member of the family Crenuchidae.

Pariana caxiuanensis (Poaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from the Brazilian Amazon. The new species is characterized by having the leaves clustered at the apex of the leafy culm, fimbriae few to absent, dimorphic flowering culms, large ligules (2.5–4 mm long), and pubescent to hirsute synflorescences. We present a morphological description, illustrations of the new species, the conservation status assessment, and a key to differentiate P. caxiuanensis from its morphologically related congeners.

A new species of Alternanthera from the northern region of Kerala (India)―Alternanthera ebracteolata―is described and illustrated. Morphological description as well as original photographs and drawings are provided. A. ebracteolata is morphologically similar to A. tenella from which differs by the peduncled inflorescence, number of flowers per glomerule, shape and colour of the bracts, absence of bracteoles, shape and color of appendages on androecial tube, and shape of seeds.

The genus Parapentacentrus Shiraki, 1930 includes two species with long wings. In this paper, we report one new species, P. brevipennis He sp. nov., from Jinping, Yunnan, China. The new species have short forewings and hindwings, and have differences in the shape of supra-anal plate and male genitalia. DNA Barcode (COI gene) of this new species are provided. The type specimens are deposited in Museum of Biology, East China Normal University (ECNU).

A new species of Persicaria, P. humboldtiana, endemic to a narrow area of waterfalls in Corupá, southern Brazil, is described in the present paper. The locus classicus of the new species is well-known for plant endemisms. A complete morphological description, original pictures, a distribution map, and a morphological comparison with the similar Eurasian species P. minor (≡ Polygonum minus) are given. The name Polygonum minus is lecto- and epitypified on, respectively, a Morison’s illustration and a specimen preserved at BM.

AbstractBioblapsís mallochi sp. n., from Scotland is described and a key is given to adult Bioblapsis. The host of B. mallochi is the syrphid Cheilosía longula, which breeds in fruiting bodies of Boletus fungi growing in the ground flora of pinewoods. The host of Bioblapsis polita (Vollenhoven) appears to be species of the hoverfly genus Ferdinandea which are associated with sap-flows on deciduous trees. These are unusual host species for diplazontines which are more typically associated with predacious hoverflies.
