A relatively complete Permian basinal ammonoid sequence with six zones has been newly recognized in South China, in ascending order,Properrinites gigantus-Svetlanoceras serpentinum,Svetlanoceras uraloceraformis-Prothalassoceras biforme,Popanoceras kueichowense-Medlicottia orbignyanus,Metaperrinites shaiwaensis-Popanoceras ziyunense,Waagenocerassp.-Propinacoceras beyrichi, andEoaraxoceras spinosai-Difuntites furnishi. The upper three zones are close to being duplicated from the Permian of Las Delicias, Coahuila, Mexico and west Texas, USA; while the lower three zones compare well to those of the Lower Permian in South Urals. TheEoaraxoceras-Difuntitesassemblage, as an index fauna of the upper Capitanian in Coahuila, has been found from the Claystone (3rd) Member of the Shaiwa Formation with the commonly accepted Lopingian stratigraphic age. The updated Permian ammonoid biostratigraphy in South China reveals a possible overlap between the basinal Guadalupian from North America and the platform-based Lopingian from South China.

Abundant “hydrozoans” are important frame-building and accessory organisms in Middle and Upper Permian reefs of southern China, particularly in western Hubei, eastern Sichuan, eastern Yunnan, and northwestern Guangxi. The new genera Radiotrabeculopora, Lichuanopora, and Pseudopalaeoaplysina are described, as are the new species Disjectopora beipeiensis, D. irregulara, Radiotrabeculopora xiangoboensis, R. maokoui, R. elegans, R. reticulata, R. astrorhiza, Balatonia robusta, Lichuanopora bancaoensis, L.(?) regulara, Pseudopalaeoaplysina sinensis, and P. major. The assemblage represents one of the most diverse upper Paleozoic “hydrozoan” assemblages known.

Middle and Late Permian sphinctozoan sponges described here are from the Middle Permian Maokou and the Upper Permian Wujiaping and Changxing Formations. Most are from near Xiangbo, northwestern Guangxi, but a few are from Upper Permain patch reefs from Laolongdong in eastern Sichuan. The new genera, the porateImbricatocoeliaand the aporateGlomocystospongia, are described, the latter as the type genus for the new family Glomocystospongiidae. New species described includeAmblysiphonella specialis, Amblysiphonella spinosa, Amblysiphonellasp. A,Amblysiphonellasp. B,Colospongia maxima, Colospongiasp. A,Imbricatocoelia elongata, I. irregulara, I. obconica, I. paucipora, Neoguadalupia explanata, Subascosymplegma?paracatenulata, Rhabdactinia depressa, R. irregulara, R. squamula, Salzburgia nana, Glomocystospongia gracilis, Sollasia absita, andS. spheroida. The described assemblage represents the most diverse Permian sphinctozoan sponge fauna known from Asia.

Abstract Two new genera and six new species of trilobites are systematically documented herein: Sinagnostus mirabilis new genus new species, Yanpingia punctata n. gen. n. sp., Illaenus taoyuanensis n. sp., Panderia striolatus n. sp., Nileus yichongqiaoensis n. sp., and Paratiresias peculiaris n. sp. The materials were collected from the Darriwilian (late Middle Ordovician) strata in the Upper Yangtze Region, South China. Also provided is an emended diagnosis of the genus Paratiresias based on the new species Paratiresias peculiaris, which is the oldest known species of this genus with an extremely narrow (sag. and exsag.) preglabellar field. Those Chinese species previously referred to Nanillaenus are reassigned to Illaenus sensu lato. These trilobites add new data for the Darriwilian trilobite macroevolution and show highly endemic to South China and the faunal exchanges between South China and Tarim, Kazakhstan, Alborz, as well as Sibumasu and North China. Two new genera and three new species of cave-adapted ground beetles belonging to the tribe Trechini are established and described: Wulongius qilingergen. nov. and sp. nov. from limestone cave Qiankou Dong (Chongqing: Wulong), Qianotrechus congcongaesp. nov. from cave Shigao Dong (Chongqing: Nanchuan), and Qianlongius zhouigen. nov. and sp. nov. from cave Qianlong Dong (Guizhou: Songtao). Wulongius qilingersp. nov. is a small aphaenopsian beetle with a thin and elongated body, while Qianlongius zhouisp. nov. is a semi-aphaenopsian with a stout body. Both new genera are not closely related to any genus of Trechini occurring in the South China Karst, and so their systematic positions remain unclear.

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

We provide a synthesis of all mammal taxa described from the African mainland, Madagascar and all surrounding islands in the 20 years since 1988, thereby supplementing the earlier works of G.M. Allen (1939) and W.F.H. Ansell (1989), and bringing the list of African mammals described over the last 250 years current to December 2008. We list 175 new extant taxa, including five new genera, one new subgenus, 138 new species and 31 new subspecies, including remarks, where relevant, on the current systematic position of each taxon. Names of seven species of primates are emended, according to the requirements of the ICZN. The taxonomic group in which the largest number of new taxa has been described is the Primates, with two new genera, 47 new species and 11 new subspecies, while geographically the biggest increase in new species descriptions has been on the island of Madagascar, accounting for roughly half (67) of all new species described in the past 20 years. Nearly half of all new species listed currently are assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (49 of 101 listed species) suggesting further research is urgently needed to help clarify the status of those recently described species.

Abstract. A very diverse ostracod fauna was discovered in the latest Permian strata of the Dongpan section, southwestern Guangxi, South China. Fifty-one species belonging to twenty-eight genera were identified and described, including two new species (Bairdia dongpanensis n. sp. and Spinomicrocheilinella anterocompressa n. sp). This type of assemblage, with nineteen palaeopsychrospheric species and four pelagic species, is the first world-wide deep-water ostracod fauna reported from the latest Permian strata and the first one recorded in the Permian of China. The palaeoenvironmental analysis allows one to propose an evaluation of the bathymetry variation along the Dongpan section.
