Behavioral characteristics such as aggressiveness and predation preference of the phytoseiid predatory species, Amblyseius swirskii, Neoseiulus californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were investigated when applied together. We quantified the chance and time of a successful attack to a heterospecific larva as aggressiveness of adult females. In order to the determine the predation preference of adult females equal combination of con/heterospecific larvae were presented to as prey in absence of their main prey (Tetranychus urticae Koch) for 24 h. Experiments were carried out in growth chamber at 25±1 ºC, 65±5% RH and 16:8 (L: D) hour photoperiod regimens. The results showed that adult females of N. californicus needed 39.65±7.46 min. to attack and kill the larva of P. persimilis which was remarkably less than that recorded (227.80±28.38 min.) for adult females of P. persimilis to attack and kill N. californicus larva. N. californicus was estimated more aggressive than P. persimilis. The mean estimated attack time of A. swirskii and P. persimilis was estimated 18.55±2.89 and 201.70±25.42 min., respectively. A. swirskii was considered more aggressive than P. persimilis against heterospecific larvae. The predation preference index (Manly´s β) were indicated that N. californicus was able to recognize con/heterospecific larva, resulted more preference for heterospecific larvae (P. persimilis) in absence of T. urticae, while adult P. persimilis showed no preference (between con and heterospecific larva). Manly´s β, for A. swirskii was 0.706 and 0.294, for P. persimilis 0.369 and 0.630 on hetero and conspecific larvae, respectively. Results of this study showed that, A. swirskii and N. californicus are general predators were able to roecgnize con/heterospecific larva and preferred to feed on heterospecific larvae and get benefit from intraguild predation.

AbstractIntraguild predation is a notable factor to proper application of biocontrol agents to reduce pest populations. Intraguild predation was studied between Typhlodromus bagdasarjani Wainstein and Arutunjan (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in presence and absence of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) as well as pollen. Intraguild predation between two predators was bidirectional. The highest and the lowest predation rates of both predators in absence and presence of T. urticae as well as in the pollen treatments were on heterospecific eggs and deutonymphs, respectively. Typhlodromus bagdasarjani consumed more heterospecific eggs compared with P. persimilis. When pollen was added, predation of T. bagdasarjani significantly reduced on heterospecific eggs and deutonymphs in absence and presence of T. urticae treatments, respectively. However, predation rate of P. persimilis on heterospecific stages was not significantly affected by pollen addition. Oviposition of both predators was higher in presence of T. urticae than in its absence and oviposition of P. persimilis was significantly higher on heterospecific stages than T. bagdasarjani. Pollen addition had a significant effect on increasing the oviposition rate of T. bagdasarjani. Extraguild prey presence had a nonsignificant effect on the consumption rate of intraguild prey by the intraguild predators. However, presence of extraguild prey led to a significant increase in oviposition rate of both predators.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a crucial point in awareness of pesticides and heavy metal’s side effects on non-target beneficial arthropods. Studies on the toxicity of selected pesticides and heavy metals to predatory mite species: Phytoseiulus persimilis and Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) have been carried out. insecticides were used: (greeno 10% Hexathiazox), Agri-Flex® 18.56% (abamectin,Thiamethoxam) and Baylor - 24 % (Chlorfenapyr) beside many of concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cu, Pb, Mn, and Zn). Acalypha wilkesiana (Müll. Arg). The results showed that the highest effect of chemical acaricides on predators Baylor - 24% with a percentage of 90.6%, and the lowest mortality was Agri-Flex® 18.56% with a percentage of 47.5% in dose 2ml double of the recommended dose. Also, in dose (0.25,0.5 and 1ml), the highest toxicity was Baylor - 24 % in secondlevel greeno 10% finally was Agri-Flex® 18.56%. In P. persimilis, the effective dose 0.25 ml with a mortality rate of 7.5%. Also, results showed that the highest mortality rate against A. swirskii were Baylor - 24 %in concentration 2 ml was 90.6 % mortality, and lowest mortality rate in the concentration of .025 ml was 11.30 then greeno 10% the highest mortality was 44%, and the lowest conc in .025 ml was 5%.results showed that the highest or most toxic heavy metals of death rate on P. persimilis also M. Swerskii in Cd treatment, and the lowest mortality was Zn treatments among Mortality rate and repellent rate

Abstract The greenhouse cucumber pests, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), are major threats to the production of greenhouse cucumbers (Cucurbitaceae) in Lebanon. The development of insecticide resistance by these pests has prompted the use of alternative and sustainable pest management strategies. In this study, we used integrated pest management strategies, including the release of the biological control agents, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae), to control whitefly, thrips, and two-spotted spider mite populations on greenhouse cucumber plants in two commercial production sites (sites A and B). We also compared the efficacy of pest population suppression using the integrated pest management strategy with that of chemical pest control. Our results show that biological control effectively maintains the cucumber pest populations below the economic threshold when coupled with additional integrated pest management measures. In addition, we show that biological control agents were equally or more effective in pest population suppression compared to eight and 12 insecticidal and acaricidal sprays performed in the control greenhouses at sites A and B, respectively. Altogether, our results show the efficacy of adopting integrated pest management and biological control for pest population suppression in greenhouse cucumber production under Mediterranean environmental conditions.

Cannibalism and intraguild predation (IGP) are two common interactions occurs in animal kingdom which influence their population structure and dynamics. Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes) and Scolothrips takahashii (Priesner) are important natural enemies of citrus red mite Panonychus citri (McGregor). However, little was known about their interactions and how the availability of extraguild (EG) prey P. citri modulated their interactions. In this study, we determined incidences of cannibalism and intraguild predation of these two predators when different densities of extraguild prey P. citri were available. Our results showed that incidences of both cannibalism and IGP and were significantly reduced in the presence of the extraguild prey. The intraguild predation between N. barkeri and S. takahashii was bidirectional, but N. barkeri was a predominant intraguild predator over S. takahashii. The S. takahashii fed on immobile N. barkeri egg, and N. barkeri fed on inactive prepupa and pupa of S. takahashii, but the conspecifics seldom did. Our results indicated that the interactions of predators decreased significantly when prey was available. The predatory mite N. barkeri was a stronger interspecific competitor. The results of this study may be useful in developing effective biological control strategies against P. citri.

Abstract Background The predatory mites, Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor), N. barkeri (Hughes), and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, are important predators attacking many insect and mite pests. They can coexist in the same habitat and engage in intraguild predation (IGP). Main body IGP was assessed among the exotic one N. californicus and the native species N. barkeri and A. swirskii as Intraguild predator (IG-predator)/intraguild prey (IG-prey) in either absence or presence of extra-guild prey Tetranychus urticae Koch (EG-prey). In the laboratory, the physiological parameters, longevity, fecundity, and predation rate of these predatory mites’ females, fed on EG-prey, were evaluated, where phytoseiid larvae are considered as (IG-prey) or combined IG-prey with EG-prey. All predatory species consumed larval stages of each other’s, but in case of N. californicus, females failed to sustain oviposition on N. barkeri larvae. Also, it was noticed that N. californicus females killed 3 times more A. swirskii larvae than N. barkeri larvae, whereas A. swirskii consumed more N. californicus than N. barkeri larvae, respectively. Neoseiulus californicus lived longer on T. urticae and A. swirskii larvae than on N. barkeri, while the latter survived longer on T. urticae only than on the other prey or with combinations with T. urticae. Amblyseius swirskii lived shorter when fed exclusively on T. urticae or IG-prey than on EG-prey combined with IG-prey. In choice experiments, N. californicus showed a higher preference to consume more T. urticae than any of phytoseiid larvae. The comparison between T. urticae and IG-prey diets definite the higher influence of T. urticae on the fecundity in N. californicus and N. barkeri than on IG-prey, whereas in A. swirskii fecundity was as equal on T. urticae as on IG-prey N. californicus larvae. Conclusion A. swirskii seemed to be the strongest IG-predator.

In this study, we examined biological control Thirps palmi Karny of a predatory mite Amblyseius (Typhlodromips) swirskii (AthiasHenriot), the anthocorid bug Orius sp. and combination of Amblyseius swirskii and Orius sp. The experiments in laboratory condition showed that combination of these two species have the ability to prey consumtion is higher than using only predator (Orius sp. or Amblyseius swirskii). The fecundity of Orius sp. in the absence of Amblyseius swirskii (the total number of eggs/ females = 45.5 ± 2.25 eggs, the oviposition period = 16.49 ± 0.5 days) were higher than in the presence of Amblyseius swirskii (the total number of eggs/ females = 35.6 ± 2.33 eggs, the oviposition period = 13.1 ± 0.63 days). Similar with Amblyseius swirskii, the fecundity of Amblyseius swirskii in the absence of Orius sp. (the total number of eggs/females = 35.57 ± 3.62 eggs, the oviposition period = 21.33 ± 0.7 days) were higher than in the presence of Amblyseius swirskii (the total number of eggs/ females = 24.1 ± 1.67 eggs, the oviposition period = 13 ± 1.43 days). In the greenhouse with area of 300m2, the experiments were conducted when used two-predator were average aduts (Orius sp. were 3.47 adult/ leaf, A. swirskii were 6.96 adult/ leaf) were aqual as release of only Orius sp. (average adult = 3.81 adult/ leaf) or only Amblyseius swirskii (average adult = 6.49 adult/ leaf). This study also provides further evidence that intraguild predation does not necessarily have negative effects on biological control.
