Composite materials are used in many environments due to their special properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and the ability to be tailored to specific requirements. In particular, the use of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) for pressure vessels/pipes has increased in structural applications such as fuel tanks, pipes, vessels, and rocket motor cases. Assessing failure conditions is important to ensure that these structures do not fail under their operating condition. In this study, an analytical procedure is developed to predict the fatigue behavior of FRC. A numerical model will also be developed and applied to failure analysis under internal pressure loading.

The importance of determining and understanding the very high cycle fatigue behaviors of materials has gained strength in recent years. Ti-alloys, in view of their high strength-to-weight ratio, have a range of structural applications. Of these, Ti-6Al-4V, belonging to the alpha-beta type is the most widely used. The present paper deals with investigations on the fatigue behavior of TC4, the Chinese equivalent to Ti-6Al-4V, up to very high cycles. Fatigue testing was carried out on a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue machine operating at 20 kHz frequency. Hourglass shaped resonant specimens were tested in ambient air at room temperature under completely reversed loading conditions (R = -1). Failure in the alloy was seen to occur right up to the gigacycle regime, with the fractures being found to initiate from the surface unlike in steels. The fracture surfaces exhibit brittle characteristics containing river patterns and cleavage facets, as well as striations.

Abstract Anisotropic composite cylinders and pressure vessels have been widely employed in automotive, aerospace, chemical and other engineering areas due to high strength/stiffness-to-weight ratio, exceptional corrosion resistance, and superb thermal performance. Pipes, fuel tanks, chemical containers, rocket motor cases and aircraft and ship elements are a few examples of structural application of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) for pressure vessels/pipes. Since the performance of composite materials replies on the tensile and compressive strengths of the fiber directions, the optimum design of composite laminates with varying fiber orientations is desired to minimize the damage of the structure. In this study, a complete mathematical 3D elasticity solution was developed, which can accurately compute stresses of a thick multilayered anisotropic fiber reinforced pressure vessel under force and pressure loadings. A rotational variable is introduced in the formalism to treat torsional loading in addition to force and pressure loadings. Then, the three-dimensional Tsai-Wu criterion is used based on the analytical solution to predict the failure. Finally, a global optimization algorithm is used to find the optimum fiber orientation and their best combination through the thickness direction.

Over the past two decades it has been established that composite materials are the leading emerging materials. The natural fibres present a number of advantages over traditional synthetic fibres because of their better corrosion resistance, excellent thermo-mechanical properties and high strength to weight ratio. Also the composite materials play an important role in maintaining the eco-friendly design requirements. Among this, polymer matrix composite is one of the recent developing sectors on the composite field, because it has high strength with less density as compared to the metal matrix composite. Depending on the applications, the properties of the polymer reinforced composite are improved by modifying compositions, process of fabrication and direction of fibre etc. In this analysis the Roselle Fibre (Hibiscus Sabdariffa) is reinforced with polymer composite by wt % in the mode of compression molding. The mechanical properties of the above fabricated material were analyzed by ASTM Standards and also the characterization of polymer composites were analysed using SEM. The compressive strength and the hardness value were high as compared to other strength properties; hence it is more suitable for compressive and structural applications. The results concluded that the treated fibre with chemical reveals better compatibility with polymer matrix than that of untreated fibre.

A monofiber reinforced composite leaf spring is proposed as an alternative to the typical steel one as it is characterized by high strength-to-weight ratio. Different reinforcing schemes are suggested to fabricate the leaf spring. The composite and the typical steel leaf springs are subjected to the same working conditions. A weight saving of about more than 60% can be achieved while maintaining the strength for the structures under consideration. The objective of the present study was to replace material for leaf spring. This study suggests various materials of hybrid fiber reinforced plastics (HFRP). Also the effects of shear moduli of the fibers, matrices, and the composites on the composites performance and responses are discussed. The results and behaviors of each are compared with each other and verified by comparison with analytical solution; a good convergence is found between them. The elastic properties of the hybrid composites are calculated using rules of mixtures and Halpin-Tsi equation through the software of MATLAB v-7. The problem is also analyzed by the technique of finite element analysis (FEA) through the software of ANSYS v-14. An element modeling was done for every leaf with eight-node 3D brick element (SOLID185 3D 8-Node Structural Solid).

Bonded patches are widely used in several industry sectors for repairing damaged plates, cracks in metallic structures, and reinforcement of damaged structures. Composite patches have optimal properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, easiness in being applied, and high flexibility. Due to recent rapid growth in the aerospace industry, analyses of adhesively bonded patches applicable to repairing cracked structures have become of great significance. In the present study, the fatigue behavior of the aluminum alloy, repaired by a double-sided glass/epoxy composite patch, is studied numerically. More specifically, the effect of applying a double-sided composite patch on the fatigue life improvement of a damaged aluminum 6061-T6 is analyzed. 3D finite element numerical modeling is performed to analyze the fatigue performance of both repaired and unrepaired aluminum plates using the Abaqus package. To determine the fatigue life of the aluminum 6061-T6 plate, first, the hysteresis loop is determined, and afterward, the plastic strain amplitude is calculated. Finally, by using the Coffin-Manson equation, fatigue life is predicted and validated against the available experimental data from the literature. Results reveal that composite patches increase the fatigue life of cracked structures significantly, ranging from 55% to 100% for different applied stresses.

In this work 300M steel samples is used. This high-strength steel is used in aeronautic and aerospace industry and other structural applications. Initially the 300 M steel sample was submitted to a heat treatment to obtain a bainític structure. It was heated at 850 °C for 30 minutes and after that, cooled at 300 °C for 60 minutes. Afterwards two types of surface treatments have been employed: (a) using low-power laser CO2 (125 W) for introducing carbon into the surface and (b) plasma nitriding at a temperature of 500° C for 3 hours. After surface treatment, the metallographic preparation was carried out and the observations with optical and electronic microscopy have been made. The analysis of the coating showed an increase in the hardness of layer formed on the surface, mainly, among the nitriding layers. The mechanical properties were analyzed using tensile and fatigue tests. The results showed that the mechanical properties in tensile tests were strongly affected by the bainitic microstructure. The steel that received the nitriding surface by plasma treatment showed better fatigue behavior. The results are very promising because the layer formed on steel surface, in addition to improving the fatigue life, still improves protection against corrosion and wear.

Composites have been found to be the most promising and discerning material available in this century. Presently, composites reinforced with fibers of synthetic or natural materials are gaining more importance as demands for lightweight materials with high strength for specific applications are growing in the market. Fiber-reinforced polymer composite offers not only high strength to weight ratio, but also reveals exceptional properties such as high durability; stiffness; damping property; flexural strength; and resistance to corrosion, wear, impact, and fire. These wide ranges of diverse features have led composite materials to find applications in mechanical, construction, aerospace, automobile, biomedical, marine, and many other manufacturing industries. Performance of composite materials predominantly depends on their constituent elements and manufacturing techniques, therefore, functional properties of various fibers available worldwide, their classifications, and the manufacturing techniques used to fabricate the composite materials need to be studied in order to figure out the optimized characteristic of the material for the desired application. An overview of a diverse range of fibers, their properties, functionality, classification, and various fiber composite manufacturing techniques is presented to discover the optimized fiber-reinforced composite material for significant applications. Their exceptional performance in the numerous fields of applications have made fiber-reinforced composite materials a promising alternative over solitary metals or alloys.
