Simulation of the Interaction Between a Slender Flexible Cylinder and an Axial High-Speed Air Flow

This research analyzes the interaction between fibers and the air jets that are used to accelerate them in fiber processing industries. Typically, supersonic flow is used to achieve sufficiently high thread speeds. However, this flow contains shocks and expansions, resulting in large longitudinal variations in force on the thin and flexible thread. Consequently, a complex fluid-structure interaction (FSI) occurs between the supersonic air flow and the thread. In this research, the fluid-structure interaction between a supersonic air flow and a thread is studied numerically using three-dimensional simulations. The thread is represented by a smooth and flexible cylindrical body. The displacement of the thread is calculated for a given traction on its surface using a finite element structural dynamics code. The compressible flow around the thread is calculated using a finite volume computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework to account for the thread deformation. In these partitioned simulations, the kinematic and dynamic equilibrium conditions on the fluid-structure interface are satisfied using a coupling algorithm. Two coupling algorithms are compared and the influence of numerical parameters is investigated. The fluid-structure interaction simulations reveal transversal running waves in the thread. By comparing the speed of these waves with the propagation speed of the shock waves in the tube, it can be concluded that these phenomena are not related.

Nowadays, advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are being applied to many aircraft structures in order to improve performance and reduce weight. Most composites have strong, stiff fibres in a matrix which is weaker and less stiff. However, aircraft wings can break due to Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) oscillations or material fatigue. The airflow around an airplane wing causes the wing to deform, while a wing deformation causes a change in the air pattern around it. Due to thrust force, turbulent flow and high speed, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is very important and arouses complex mechanical effects. Due to the non-linear properties of fluids and solids as well as the shape of the structures, only numerical approaches can be used to solve such problems. The principal aim of this research is to explore and understand the behaviour of the fluid-structure interaction during the impact of a deformable material (e.g. an aircraft wing) on air. This project focuses on the analysis of Navier-Stokes and elastodynamic equations in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) frameworks in order to numerically simulate the FSI effect on a double wedge airfoil. Since analytical solutions are only available in special cases, the equation needs to be solved by numerical methods. Of all methods, the finite element method was chosen due to its special characteristics and for its implementation, the software package DOpElib.

In air-jet weaving looms, the main nozzle pulls the yarn from the prewinder by means of a high velocity air flow. The flexible yarn is excited by the flow and exhibits high amplitude oscillations. The motion of the yarn is important for the reliability and the attainable speed of the insertion. Fluid-structure interaction simulations calculate the interaction between the air flow and the yarn motion and could provide additional insight into yarn behavior. However, the use of an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach for the deforming fluid domain around a flexible yarn typically results in severe mesh degradation, vastly reducing the accuracy of the calculations or limiting the physical time that can be simulated. In this research, the feasibility of using a Chimera technique to simulate the motion of a yarn interacting with the air flow from a main nozzle was investigated. This methodology combines a fixed background grid with a moving component grid deforming along with the yarn. The component grid is, however, not constrained by the boundaries of the flow domain allowing for large deformations with limited mesh degradation. Two separate cases were investigated. In the first case, the yarn was considered to be clamped at the main nozzle inlet. For the second case, the yarn was allowed to move axially as the main nozzle pulled it from a drum storage system.

Pressure losses at the cylinder valves of reciprocating compressors are generally calculated by the classical equation of the flow through an orifice, with flow coefficient determined in steady conditions. Rotational speed has increased in the last decade to reduce compressor physical dimensions, weight and cost. Cylinder valves and associated gas passages became then more and more critical, as they determine specific consumption and throughput. An advanced approach, based on the new Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) software, which allows to deal simultaneously with thermodynamic, motion and deformation phenomena, was utilized to simulate the complex situation that occurs in a reciprocating compressor cylinder during the motion of the piston. In particular, the pressure loss through valves, ducts and manifolds was investigated. A 3D CFD Model, simulating a cylinder with suction and discharge valves, was developed and experimentally validated. The analysis was performed in transient and turbulent condition, with compressible fluid, utilizing a deformable mesh. The 3D domain simulating the compression chamber was considered variable with the law of motion of the piston and the valve rings mobile according to the fluid dynamic forces acting on them. This procedure is particularly useful for an accurate valve loss evaluation in case of high speed compressors and heavy gases. Also very high pressure cylinders, including LDPE applications, where the ducts are very small and MW close to the water one, can benefit from the new method.

Ground-supported cylindrical tanks are used to store a variety of liquids. The fluid was develops a hydrodynamic pressures on walls and bottom of the tank during earthquake. This paper provides dynamic time-history response of concrete open top cylindrical liquid storage tank considering fluid-structure interaction due to earthquake. Numerical model of cylindrical tank was performed by application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) utilizing software ADINA. Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation was used for the problem analysis. Two way Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) techniques were used for the simulation of the interaction between the structure and the fluid at the common boundary

This paper provides a brief overview of the research in the field of Fluid-structure interaction in Wind Turbines. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the interplay of some movable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid flow. Flow brought about vibrations of two airfoils used in wind turbine blades are investigated by using a strong coupled fluid shape interplay approach. The approach is based totally on a regularly occurring Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code that solves the Navier-Stokes equations defined in Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) coordinates by way of a finite extent method. The need for the FSI in the wind Turbine system is studied and comprehensively presented.

A monolithic semi-implicit method is presented for three-dimensional simulation of fluid–structure interaction problems. The updated Lagrangian framework is used for the structure modeled by linear elasticity equation and, for the fluid governed by the Navier–Stokes equations, we employ the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method. We use a global mesh for the fluid–structure domain where the fluid–structure interface is an interior boundary. The continuity of velocity at the interface is automatically satisfied by using globally continuous finite element for the velocity in the fluid–structure mesh. The method is fast because we solve only a linear system at each time step. Three-dimensional numerical tests are presented.
