In this study, for the stiffened panels subjected to the in-plane cyclic compression loads, the two followings are clarified. One is a generating process of the cumulative buckling deformation at panel parts of stiffened panels. The other is the effect of the cumulative buckling deformation on the ultimate strength of stiffened panels. To clarify them, the cyclic compression loading experiments were carried out with two stiffened panel specimens by using Multi Axis Loading System in National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI) in Japan. For one stiffened panel specimen, the thirty-one sets of compression test cases were conducted with different strokes and for each case. The number of cycles in each set was 100. While, for the other, it was subjected to the cyclic compression loads until it collapsed. In addition, Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses for stiffened panels subjected cyclic compression loads are carried out with the same condition as the experiments by using commercial FEM software, LS-DYNA.

This paper presents a non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) and subsequent formula development for ultimate strength of stiffened panels of ship structures. A review of studies on ultimate strength of ship plating subjected to lateral pressure was carried out. The present work takes into account, the influence due to the lateral pressure on the ultimate strength of stiffened plates with initial imperfections subject to longitudinal compressive loads. ANSYS non-linear FE software was used for non linear finite element analyses of stiffened panels (864 cases) considering VLCC hull. Based on regression analysis, a set of semi-analytical formulae were proposed and described. It is observed that depending upon the failure mode, scantlings of the stiffened panel and magnitude of lateral pressure, ultimate strength of the stiffened panels in compression is affected.

This study aims at studying different configurations of the stiffened panels in order to identify robust configurations that would not be much sensitive to the imprecision in boundary conditions that can exist in experimental set ups. A numerical study is conducted to analyze the influence of the stiffener’s geometry and boundary conditions on the ultimate strength of stiffened panels under uniaxial compression. The stiffened panels with different combinations of mechanical material properties and geometric configurations are considered. The four types of stiffened panels analysed are made of mild or high tensile steel and have bar, ‘L’ and ‘U’ stiffeners. To understand the effect of finite element modelling on the ultimate strength of the stiffened panels, four types of FE models are investigated in FE analysis including 3 bays, 1/2+1+1/2 bays, 1+1 bays and 1 bay with different boundary conditions.

Background: Cold-formed steel structural sections used in the walls of residential buildings and agricultural facilities are commonly C-shaped sections with web holes. These holes located in the web of sections can alter the elastic stiffness and the ultimate strength of a structural member. The objective of this paper is to study the buckling mode and load-carrying capacity of cold-formed thin-walled steel column with slotted web holes. Methods: Compression tests were conducted on 26 intermediate length columns with and without holes. The tested compressive members included four different kinds of holes. For each specimen, a shell finite element Eigen-buckling analysis and nonlinear analysis were also conducted. The influence of the slotted web hole on local and distortional buckling response had also been studied. The comparison on ultimate strength between test results and calculated results using Chinese cold-formed steel specification GB50018-2002, North American cold-formed steel specification AISI S100-2016, and nonlinear Finite Element method was made. Result: Test results showed that the distortional buckling occurred for intermediate columns with slotted holes and the ultimate strength of columns with holes was less than that of columns without holes. The ultimate strength of columns decreased with the increase in transverse width of hole in the cross-section of member. The Finite element analysis results showed that the web holes could influence on the elastic buckling stress of columns. The shell finite element could be used to model the buckling modes and analysis the ultimate strength of members with slotted web holes. The calculated ultimate strength shows that results predicted with AISI S100-2016 and analyzed using finite element method are close to test results. The calculated results using Chinese code are higher than the test results because Chinese code has no provision to calculate the ultimate strength of members with slotted web holes. Conclusion: The calculated method for cold-formed thin-walled steel columns with slotted web holes are proposed based on effective width method in Chinese code. The results calculated using the proposed method show good agreement with test results and can be used in engineering design for some specific cold-formed steel columns with slotted web holes studied in this paper.

Background:Stiffened panels are being used as a lightweight structure in aerospace, marine engineering and retrofitting of building and bridge structure. In this paper, two efficient analytical computational tools, namely, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are used to analyze and compare the results of the laminated composite 750-hat-stiffened panels. Objective:Finite Element (FE) is an efficient and versatile method for the analysis of a complex problem. FE models have been used to generate data set of four different parameters. The four parameters are extensional stiffness ratio of skin in the longitudinal direction to the transverse direction, orthotropy ratio of the panel, the ratio of twisting stiffness to transverse flexural stiffness and smeared extensional stiffness ratio of stiffeners to that of the plate. Results and Conclusion:For training of ANN, multilayer feedforward back-propagation has been used as a network function with two-hidden layers in the neural network. The good network architecture is achieved after several iterations to predict the buckling load of the stiffened panel. ANN prediction for unknown new data set is in good agreement with FEA results of different cases, which show that ANN tool can be used for the design of complex structural problems in civil engineering and optimization of the laminated composite stiffened panel.

This paper describes the development of a finite element model in order to assess the static response of a top-hat-stiffened panel under uniform lateral pressure. Systematic calculations were performed for deflection, strain, and stress using the developed model based on the ANSYS three-dimensional solid element (SOLID45). The numerical modeling results were compared to the experimental findings for validation and to further understand an internal stress pattern within the different constituents of the panel for explaining the likely causes of the panel failure. Good correlation between experimental and numerical strains and displacements was achieved.

An approach for simulation of rock fracturing as a result of engineering blasting is presented in this paper. The approach uses element elimination technique within the framework of finite element method to capture the physics of engineering blasting. The approach does not require pre-placement of fracture paths which is the severe drawback of the other existing methodologies and approaches. Results of plane stress modelling for isotropic brittle rock behaviour are presented in this paper and these results are in good agreement with the existing knowledge base. The authors also review the existing approaches of numerical modelling to compare the efficacy of the element elimination technique. It is anticipated that the further developments with this approach can prove to be good experimental tool to improve engineering blasting operations.

The nanoindentation loading response of elastoplastic materials was simulated by the finite element method (FEM). The influence of the Young’s modulus E, yield stress σy, strain hardening exponent n and Poisson’s ratio ν on the loading response was investigated. Based on an equivalent model, an equation with physical meaning was proposed to quantitatively describe the influence. The calculations agree well with the FEM simulations and experimental results in literature. Comparisons with the predictions using equations in the literature also show the reliability of the proposed equation. The investigations show that the loading curvature C increases with increasing E, σy, n and ν. The increase rates of C with E, σy, n and ν are different for their different influences on the flow stress after yielding. It is also found that the influence of one of the four mechanical parameters on C can be affected by the other mechanical parameters.

A novel optimization methodology for stiffened panel is proposed in this paper. The purpose of the optimization methodology is to improve the first buckling load of the panel which is obtained by finite element method. The stacking sequence of the stiffeners is taken as design variables. In order to ensure the manufacturability of design, the design guidelines of stacking sequence are taken into account. A DOE based on Halton Sequence makes the initial points of genetic algorithm spread more evenly in the design space of laminate parameters and consequently accelerates the search to convergence. The numerical example verifies the efficiency of this method.
