Computation of Hydrodynamic Load and Strength Assessment of Highly Skewed Propeller

Ship Classification societies have rule requirements for assessment of propeller strength in terms of minimum blade thickness, however these rules generally covers only propellers of conventional geometry. In case of nonconventional (e.g. highly skewed) propellers, class societies ask for direct and detailed stress analysis for examination and approval. This paper introduces a procedure/strategy for assessing the strength of highly skewed propeller by determination of hydrodynamic load and consequent structural stress. The hydrodynamic analysis is performed separately using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) solver STARCCM+ and structural analyses by finite element solver ANSYS. The hydrodynamic pressures as computed by CFD are transferred to the propeller model to calculate the resulting stationary stresses for maximum and minimum blade loading, using a quasi-static approach. The significance of root fillet in propeller design is demonstrated by comparing blade stress results with and without fillet at blade root. The stress concentration as a function of geometry and loading is also represented by the presented examples. The proposed method can assist the designer or reviewer to assess adequacy of strength of solid propellers as well as composite propellers of any geometrical configuration.

This article presents an overview of the recent developments at Instituto Superior Técnico and Maritime Research Institute Netherlands in applying computational methods for the hydrodynamic analysis of ducted propellers. The developments focus on the propeller performance prediction in open water conditions using boundary element methods and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solvers. The article starts with an estimation of the numerical errors involved in both methods. Then, the different viscous mechanisms involved in the ducted propeller flow are discussed and numerical procedures for the potential flow solution proposed. Finally, the numerical predictions are compared with experimental measurements.

Determination of high-speed crafts’ hydrodynamic coefficients will help to analyze the dynamics of these kinds of vessels and the factors affecting their dynamic stabilities. Also, it can be useful and effective in controlling the vessel instabilities. The main purpose of this study is to determine the coefficients of longitudinal motions of a planing catamaran with and without a hydrofoil using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes method to evaluate the foil effects on them. Determination of hydrodynamic coefficients by experimental approach is costly and requires meticulous laboratory equipment; therefore, utilizing the numerical methods and developing a virtual laboratory seem highly efficient. In this study, the numerical results for hydrodynamic coefficients of a high-speed craft are verified against Troesch’s experimental results. In the following, after determination of hydrodynamic coefficients of a planing catamaran with and without foil, the foil effects on its hydrodynamic coefficients are evaluated. The results indicate that most of the coefficients are frequency-independent especially at high frequencies.

A numerical study of the generation of Tollmien-Schlichting (T–S) waves due to the interaction between a small free-stream disturbance and a small localized variation of the surface geometry has been carried out using both finite–difference and spectral methods. The nonlinear steady flow is of the viscous–inviscid interactive type while the unsteady disturbed flow is assumed to be governed by the Navier–Stokes equations linearized about this flow. Numerical solutions illustrate the growth or decay of the T–S waves generated by the interaction between the free-stream disturbance and the surface distortion, depending on the value of the scaled Strouhal number. An important result of this receptivity problem is the numerical determination of the amplitude of the T–S waves.

Vaned diffusers have been used successfully as efficient and compact dynamic pressure recovery devices in industrial centrifugal compressor stages. Typically such diffusers consist of a cascade of two-dimensional blades distributed circumferentially at close proximity to the impeller exit. In this paper three low-solidity diffuser blade geometries are numerically investigated. The first geometry employs variable stagger stacking of similar blade sections along the blade span. The second employs linearly inclined stacking to generate blade lean along the diffuser span. The third geometry employs the conventional two-dimensional low-solidity diffuser geometry with no variable stagger or lean. The variable stagger blade arrangement has the potential of better aligning the diffuser leading edges with the highly non-uniform flow leaving the impeller. Both variable stagger and linearly leaned diffuser blade arrangements, however, have the effect of redistributing the blade loading and flow streamlines in the spanwise direction leading to improved efficiency and pressure recovery capacity of the diffuser. In this paper a description of the proposed diffuser geometries is presented. The results of Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes numerical simulations of the three centrifugal compressor arrangements are discussed. Comparisons between the performance of the two and three-dimensional diffuser blade geometries are presented. The comparisons indeed show that the variable stagger and leaned diffusers present an improvement in the diffuser operating range and pressure recovery capacity over the conventional two-dimensional diffuser geometry.

A computational approach, based on a spectral-element Navier-Stokes solver, has been applied to the study of the unsteady flow arising from wake-stator interaction. Direct, as well as turbulence-model calculations, provide insight into the mechanics of the unsteady flow and demonstrate the potential for controlling its effects. The results show that the interaction between the wakes and the stator blades produces a characteristic pattern of vortical disturbances, which have been correlated to the pressure fluctuations. Within the stator passage, the wakes migrate towards the pressure surface where they evolve into counter-rotating vortices. These vortices are the dominant source of disturbances over the pressure surface of the stator blade. Over the suction surface of the stator blade, the disturbances are due to the distortion and detachment of boundary layer fluid. They can be reduced by tailoring the blade loading or by applying non-uniform suction.

In turbomachines, forced response of blades is blade vibrations due to external aerodynamic excitations and it can lead to blade failures which can have fatal or severe economic consequences. The estimation of the level of vibration due to forced response is dependent on the determination of aerodynamic damping. The most critical cases for forced response occur at high reduced frequencies. This paper investigates the determination of aerodynamic damping at high reduced frequencies. The aerodynamic damping was calculated by a linearized Navier-Stokes flow solver with exact 3D non-reflecting boundary conditions. The method was validated using Standard Configuration 8, a two-dimensional flat plate. Good agreement with the reference data at reduced frequency 2.0 was achieved and grid converged solutions with reduced frequency up to 16.0 were obtained. It was concluded that at least 20 cells per wavelength is required. A 3D profile was also investigated: an aeroelastic turbine rig (AETR) which is a subsonic turbine case. In the AETR case, the first bending mode with reduced frequency 2.0 was studied. The 3D acoustic modes were calculated at the far-fields and the propagating amplitude was plotted as a function of circumferential mode index and radial order. This plot identified six acoustic resonance points which included two points corresponding to the first radial modes. The aerodynamic damping as a function of nodal diameter was also calculated and plotted. There were six distinct peaks which occurred in the damping curve and these peaks correspond to the six resonance points. This demonstrates for the first time that acoustic resonances due to higher order radial acoustic modes can affect the aerodynamic damping at high reduced frequencies.

Purpose This paper aims to present a methodology of designing a custom propeller for specified needs. The example of propeller design for large unmanned air vehicle (UAV) is considered. Design/methodology/approach Starting from low fidelity Blade Element (BE) methods, the design is obtained using evolutionary algorithm-driven process. Realistic constraints are used, including minimum thickness required for stiffness, as well as manufacturing ones – including leading and trailing edge limits. Hence, the interactions between propellers in hex-rotor configuration, and their influence on structural integrity of the UAV are investigated. Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) are used to obtain loading on the propeller blades in hover. Optimization of the propeller by designing a problem-specific airfoil using surrogate modeling-driven optimization process is performed. Findings The methodology described in the current paper proved to deliver an efficient blade. The optimization approach allowed to further improve the blade efficiency, with power consumption at hover reduced by around 7%. Practical implications The methodology can be generalized to any blade design problem. Depending on the requirements and constraints the result will be different. Originality/value Current work deals with the relatively new class of design problems, where very specific requirements are put on the propellers. Depending on these requirements, the optimum blade geometry may vary significantly.

Considerations governing selection of power plants for yachts include determination of power for speed and performance desired. This, in turn, requires determination of the best compromise on shaft revolutions compatible with limitations of propeller diameter and possible effects of cavitation. The problem as to whether to use diesel or gasoline engines is also investigated. Curves are given which give general criteria for estimating power over a large range of speeds. Accessories including reverse gears, reduction gears, and their mode of control are discussed. Propeller design in reference to engine rating is investigated, it being pointed out that on many current engines a propeller sized for maximum power and revolutions will be much too small for the horsepower available at a continuous rating.

Tilting (parallelism error) of guiding surfaces may cause reduction of load capacity of hydrostatic (HS) guideways and bearings in machine tools (MT). Using coupled finite element (FE) computational models of MT structures, it is nowadays possible to determine the extent of guiding surfaces deformation caused by thermal effects, gravitational force, cutting forces and inertia effects. Assessment of maximum allowable tilt has so far been based merely on experience. The paper presents a detailed model developed for description of the effect of HS bearing tilt on the load capacity characteristics of HS guideways. The model allows an evaluation of the tilt influence on the change of the characteristics as well as determination of the limit values of allowable tilt in interaction with compliant machine tool structure. The proposed model is based on the model of flow over the land of the HS pocket under extended Navier-Stokes equation. The model is verified using an experimental test rig.

Most Spar platforms have a wet centerwell which provides a termination point for umbilicals and risers. The column of water in the centerwell is a dynamic system which can be excited by the wave action around the Spar as well as the platform’s own motions. When the exciting frequencies are close to the natural frequency of the water column, the vertical motion of the water in the centerwell can become large in large seastates. This might damage structures within the centerwell. A natural response to this problem is to restrict the fluid flow at the bottom of the centerwell by adding a plated structure to partially close the opening. The remaining open area in the centerwell determines the amount of damping as well as the loads on the plating which can be quite large in heavy seas. The problem addressed in this paper is the determination of the appropriate open area in the centerwell plate that will control the fluid vertical motion without requiring expensive reinforcements to the plating beyond the riser guide structure already present. Traditional design tools based on potential flow models appear to perform poorly for this problem because they do not model the viscous damping in the flow correctly. In this paper we use a Navier-Stokes solver to study the centerwell motions and centerwell plate loads for three centerwell plate geometries. It is found that the Spar motions and the free surface waves need to be included in these simulations. The centerwell water motions and centerwell plate loads are compared with those measured in a scale model experiment. Full-scale calculations are also carried out to determine the corresponding centerwell plate loads and centerwell water motions to assess scale effects.
