Aframax in Numerical Wave Tank: From Classic Decay Test to the Ship Moored in Irregular Waves

The prediction of ship motions in extreme seastates is very complex as it involves strong nonlinearities. It deals with high motions of the ship and implies strong mooring system loads. These seastates are usually modeled in tank tests but an alternative in the near future could be CFD computations. In this article, all required steps to setup and verify the hydrodynamic and numerical model are performed. The setup of the hydrodynamic and numerical model enable us to show that CFD computations of motion RAOS and pitch decay tests provide results in agreement with diffraction-radiation results. Wave only simulations enable us to verify that irregular waves are accurately modelled in the CFD domain. Since the wavemaker motion used in tank tests to generate irregular waves is not available, a process of linear back propagation is set up from the wave elevation on a wave probe in tank tests. High Order Spectral (HOS) simulations are performed to reproduce the seastate measured in tank tests. Finally, a test was performed to model the ship motions in irregular extreme waves with ICARE solver coupled to the computed HOS wave field through Spectral Wave Explicit Navier Stokes Equations (SWENSE).

This paper investigates the physical processes involved in the water filling and air expelling process of a pipe with multiple air valves under water slow filling condition, and develops a fully coupledwater–air two-phase stratified numerical model for simulating the process. In this model, the Saint-Venant equations and the Vertical Average Navier–Stokes equations (VANS) are respectively applied to describe the water and air in pipe, and the air valve model is introduced into the VANS equations of air as the source term. The finite-volume method and implicit dual time-stepping method (IDTS) with two-order accuracy are simultaneously used to solve this numerical model to realize the full coupling between water and air movement. Then, the model is validated by using the experimental data of the pressure evolution in pipe and the air velocity evolution of air valves, which respectively characterize the water filling and air expelling process. The results show that the model performs well in capturing the physical processes, and a reasonable agreement is obtained between numerical and experimental results. This agreement demonstrates that the proposed model in this paper offers a practical method for simulating water filling and air expelling process in a pipe with multiple air valves under water slow filling condition.

The problem of Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) on spool and jumper geometries is known to present several drawbacks when approached with conventional engineering tools used in the study of VIV on risers. Current recommended practices can lead to over-conservatism that the industry needs to quantify and minimize within notably cost reduction objectives. Within this purpose, the paper will present a brief critical review of the Industry standards and more particularly focus on both experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) approaches. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons between basin tests and CFD results for a 2D ‘M-shape’ spool model will be detailed. The results presented here are part of a larger experimental and numerical campaign which considered a number of current velocities, heading and geometry configurations. The vibratory response of the model will be investigated for one of the current velocities and compared with the results obtained through recommended practices (e.g. Shear7 and DNV guidelines). The strategy used by the software K-FSI to solve the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem is a partitioned coupling solver between fluid solver (FINE™/Marine) and structural solvers (ARA). FINE™/Marine solves the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations in a conservative way via the finite volume method and can work on structured or unstructured meshes with arbitrary polyhedrons, while ARA is a nonlinear finite element solver with a large displacement formulation. The experiments were conducted in the BGO FIRST facility located in La Seyne sur Mer, France. Particular attention was paid towards the model design, fabrication, instrumentation and characterization, to ensure an excellent agreement between the structural numerical model and the actual physical model. This included the use of a material with low structural damping, the performance of stiffness and decay tests in air and in still water, plus the rationalization of the instrumentation to be able to capture the response with the minimum flow perturbation or interaction due to instrumentation.

This paper documents recent advances of the SWENSE (Spectral Wave Explicit Navier-Stokes Equations) approach, a method for simulating fully nonlinear wave-body interactions including viscous effects. The methods efficiently combines a fully nonlinear potential flow description of undisturbed wave systems with a modified set of RANS with free surface equations accounting for the interaction with a ship or marine structure. Arbitrary incident wave systems may be described, including regular, irregular waves, multidirectional waves, focused wave events, etc. The model may be fixed or moving with arbitrary speed and 6 degrees of freedom motion. The extension of the SWENSE method to 6 DOF simulations in irregular waves as well as to manoeuvring simulations in waves are discussed in this paper. Different illlustative simulations are presented and discussed. Results of the present approach compare favorably with available reference results.

Carbon dioxide density-driven dissolution in a water-filled laboratory flume of the dimensions 60 cm length, 40 cm height, 1 cm thickness, was visualized using a pH-sensitive color indicator. We focus on atmospheric pressure conditions, like in caves where CO2 concentrations are typically higher. Varying concentrations of carbon dioxide were applied as boundary conditions at the top of the experimental setup, leading to the onset of convective fingering at differing times. The data were used to validate a numerical model implemented in the numerical simulator DuMux. The model solves the Navier–Stokes equations for density-induced water flow with concentration-dependent fluid density and a transport equation, including advective and diffusive processes for the carbon dioxide dissolved in water. The model was run in 2D, 3D, and pseudo-3D on two different grids. Without any calibration or fitting of parameters, the results of the comparison between experiment and simulation show satisfactory agreement with respect to the onset time of convective fingering, and the number and the dynamics of the fingers. Grid refinement matters, in particular, in the uppermost part where fingers develop. The 2D simulations consistently overestimated the fingering dynamics. This successful validation of the model is the prerequisite for employing it in situations with background flow and for a future study of karstification mechanisms related to CO2-induced fingering in caves.

AbstractSoil slides can occur when the water level in a lake or a reservoir is lowered. This may take place in situations when a reservoir is flushed to remove sediments. The current study describes a three-dimensional numerical model used for the simulation of reservoir flushing that includes the slide movements. The geotechnical failure algorithms start with modelling the groundwater levels at the banks of the reservoir. A limit equilibrium approach is further used to find the location of the slides. The actual movement of the sediments is computed by assuming the soil to be a viscous liquid and by solving the Navier–Stokes equations. The resulting bed elevation changes from the slides are computed in adaptive grids that change as a function of water level, bed erosion and slide movements. The numerical model is tested on the Bodendorf reservoir in Austria, where field measurements are available of the bank elevations before and after a flushing operation. The results from the numerical simulations are compared with these observations. A parameter test shows that the results are very sensitive to the cohesion and less sensitive to the E and G modules of the soil.

A three-dimensional numerical model was used to model water circulation and spatial variation of temperature in Lake Sperillen in Norway. A winter situation was simulated, with thermal stratification and ice cover. The numerical model solved the Navier-Stokes equations on a 3D unstructured non-orthogonal grid with hexahedral cells. The SIMPLE method was used for the pressure coupling and the k-ε model was used to model turbulence, with a modification for density stratification due to the vertical temperature profile. The results were compared with field measurements of the temperature in the lake, indicating the location of the water current. Reasonably good agreement was found.

An integrated two-dimensional vertical (2DV) model was developed to investigate wave interactions with permeable submerged breakwaters. The integrated model is capable of predicting the flow field in both surface water and porous media on the basis of the extended volume-averaged Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (VARANS). The impact of porous medium was considered by the inclusion of the additional terms of drag and inertia forces into conventional Navier–Stokes equations. Finite volume method (FVM) in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation was adopted for discretization of the governing equations. Projection method was utilized to solve the unsteady incompressible extended Navier–Stokes equations. The time-dependent volume and surface porosities were calculated at each time step using the fraction of a grid open to water and the total porosity of porous medium. The numerical model was first verified against analytical solutions of small amplitude progressive Stokes wave and solitary wave propagation in the absence of a bottom-mounted barrier. Comparisons showed pleasing agreements between the numerical predictions and analytical solutions. The model was then further validated by comparing the numerical model results with the experimental measurements of wave propagation over a permeable submerged breakwater reported in the literature. Good agreements were obtained for the free surface elevations at various spatial and temporal scales, velocity fields around and inside the obstacle, as well as the velocity profiles.

We present a numerical procedure to predict impact-related wave-induced (slamming) loads on ships. The procedure was applied to predict slamming loads on two ships that feature a flared bow with a pronounced bulb, hull shapes typical of modern offshore supply vessels. The procedure used a chain of seakeeping codes. First, a linear Green function panel code computed ship responses in unit amplitude regular waves. Ship speed, wave frequency, and wave heading were systematically varied to cover all possible combinations likely to cause slamming. Regular design waves were selected on the basis of maximum magnitudes of relative normal velocity between ship critical areas and wave, averaged over the critical areas. Second, a nonlinear strip theory seakeeping code determined ship motions under design wave conditions, thereby accounting for the nonlinear pressure distribution up to the wave contour and the frequency dependence of the radiation forces (memory effect). Third, these nonlinearly computed ship motions constituted part of the input for a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations code that was used to obtain slamming loads. Favorable comparison with available model test data validated the procedure and demonstrated its capability to predict slamming loads suitable for design of ship structures.
