Numerical Simulation of Icebreaking Process and Parameters Sensitivity Analysis

The interdependence exists between ship response and ice load during the ship-ice interaction process. According to the ice properties and the velocity between a ship and ice can make influences on ice load, taking a Russian icebreaker as model, a series of numerical simulations were performed to research the ice load variation tendency rules in 3 axial directions and the total force direction. On the basis of regarding ice elements as elastic materials, the theory of a semi-infinite elastic plate resting on an elastic foundation was used to simulate ice sheet. By means of finite element model, stress and strain contours of typical moment and ice load history curve in four directions were obtained. Furthermore, the effect of important parameters such as elasticity modulus of ice, ice thickness and ship speed on the impact force were also analyzed. The results indicate that ice sheet will crack in the form of a circle centered on the collision point which accord with actual circumstance, and there are some certain variation relationships between each calculation parameters and ice load values. At the same time, the study can also provide technological support for ice load research.

The interaction between a ship and sea ice is a complex process depending on the ice properties, the ice geometry and the relative velocity between the ship and the ice. The effect of important parameters such as ship speed and ice thickness on the impact force are studied by means of finite element model. Idealized ice element types are applied to finite element model in order to survey the impact force and the structural response of icebreaker ARAON subjected to sea ices. Interaction behaviors obtained by finite element model considering the varying parameters are also discussed to compare the numerical results with the design data of ARAON.

Diminishing ice presence in the Arctic provides the potential for extended operable period for oil and gas exploration in the Arctic. Floaters are a flexible solution for such scenario whereas they can fully take advantage of the extended drilling season as well as operate in other harsh environment regions during the off-season. Such floaters can disconnect and reconnect to avoid large ice features such as icebergs and multi-year ice ridges. However, they still need to encounter relatively large level ice. Accompanying icebreakers will ideally assist in breaking the level ice into manageable pieces. The interaction of such level ice floes with floater has a significant influence on the dynamic ice load on the floater and resulting mooring load. There is significant uncertainty in the simulation of level ice-floater interaction numerically. Most of the current research focuses on the influence of ice breaking and subsequent flow of the broken ice around the floater. However, the hydrodynamic load due to the incoming level ice will also affect the response of the floater, which is usually not simulated. A recent study simulated the multibody hydrodynamics of level ice and floater Such multibody hydrodynamic analysis is computationally expensive, and complexity in the modelling is a hindrance to its implementation in the design phase. The present study, therefore, employs a conservative estimation to include the effect of wave load on the floater in addition to the ice load. Parametric studies are performed to estimate this effect by varying the incoming wave amplitude and wave period, ice sheet thickness, ice drift velocity, floater’s hull angle, mooring stiffness and the distance of large ice-sheet from the floater. Significant impacts of waves on the floater in terms of total force are observed which clearly reflects the importance of this study. The effect of mooring stiffness on total load is also investigated at the end of this study which can be considered as a foundation for further research on optimizing the mooring stiffness for such kind of arctic floater.

Background: The sustainable development of the building industry has drawn increasing attention around the world. Nanomaterials and nanotechnology play an important role in the processes of energy saving and reducing consumption in the building industry. Nanotechnology patents provide key technological support for the green development of the building industry. Based on patent data in China, this paper quantitatively analyzed the application of nanotechnology patents in the building industry and the time trend, regional differences, and evolution of China's nano-patent applications in the building field. Methods: In this study, the environmental total factor productivity of the building industry considering carbon constraints was determined and then used as the dependent variable to measure the green development of the building industry. On this basis, a panel data regression model was constructed to determine the impact of nano-patents on the green development of the building industry. Results: Nanotechnology patents in the building industry can significantly improve total factor productivity. From the perspective of patent composition, technology-based patents that focus on substantial innovation can significantly promote the green development of the building industry, whereas strategic patents show a significant inhibitory effect. Regionally, the western region of China has the advantage of being less developed and thus more efficient than the central and eastern regions in the application of new nano-products. Finally, the research also showed a significant lag in the application of China's nanotechnology patents and low implementation efficiency. Conclusion: Nano patents can promote green development in the building industry, but there is room for improvement in the speed with which laboratory inventions are transformed into building engineering applications.

AbstractStudies about the impact of future climate change on diseases have mostly focused on standard Representative Concentration Pathway climate change scenarios. These scenarios do not account for the non-linear dynamics of the climate system. A rapid ice-sheet melting could occur, impacting climate and consequently societies. Here, we investigate the additional impact of a rapid ice-sheet melting of Greenland on climate and malaria transmission in Africa using several malaria models driven by Institute Pierre Simon Laplace climate simulations. Results reveal that our melting scenario could moderate the simulated increase in malaria risk over East Africa, due to cooling and drying effects, cause a largest decrease in malaria transmission risk over West Africa and drive malaria emergence in southern Africa associated with a significant southward shift of the African rain-belt. We argue that the effect of such ice-sheet melting should be investigated further in future public health and agriculture climate change risk assessments.

Purpose This paper aims to go deeper on the analysis of the shaft voltage of large turbogenerators. The main interest of this study is the investigation process developed. Design/methodology/approach The analysis of the shaft voltage because of several defects is based on a two-dimensional (2D) finite element modeling. This 2D finite element model is used to determine the shaft voltage because of eccentricities or rotor short-circuit. Findings Dynamic eccentricities and rotor short circuit do not have an inherent impact on the shaft voltage. Circulating currents in the stator winding because of defects impact the shaft voltage. Originality/value The original value of this paper is the investigation process developed. This study proposes to quantify the impact of a smooth stator and then to explore the contribution of the real stator winding on the shaft voltage.

Three dimensional elastic-plastic contact of two nominally flat rough surfaces is considered. Equations governing the shoulder-shoulder contact of asperities are derived based on the asperity-asperity constitutive relations from a finite element model of their elastic-plastic interaction. Shoulder-shoulder asperity contact yields a slanted contact force consisting of both tangential (parallel to mean plane) and normal components. Multiscale modeling of the elastic-plastic rough surface contact is presented in which asperity-level FE-based constitutive relations are statistically summed to obtain total force in the normal and tangential direction. The equations derived are in the form of integral functions and provide expectation of contact force components between two rough surfaces. An analytical fusion technique is developed to combine the piecewise asperity level constitutive relations. This is shown to yield upon statistical summation the cumulative effect resulting in the contact force between two rough surfaces with two components, one in the normal direction and a half-plane tangential component.

This paper reports modeling a new design of Thermal MEMS gyroscope through the use of the Comsol Multiphysics software package. Being very small and having no movable parts have made thermal MEMS gyroscope very practical. Previously designed Thermal MEMS gyroscope shows some limitation such as being vulnerable to gravity force. Finding a technique to increase the range of thermal MEMS gyroscope reliability motivated us to come up with a new design that we will refer to as the ‘Forced Convection MEMS gyroscope’. A two-dimensional finite-element model of the device has been developed to investigate its performance. An external force has been introduced to the system to create a higher-velocity hot gas stream that will be deviated more in response to rotation. The external force should be great enough that convection currents resulting from gravity or acceleration will have minimal impact on the gyroscope sensitivity. A heating element can still be used, but its primary purpose is now to warm the flowing gas so that it can be detected by the sensors. In this paper we will also show that, in order to completely eliminate the impact of gravity and increase the sensitivity of the gyroscope, it is possible to eliminate the heaters entirely and instead use heated sensors to detect gas currents. In other words, the sensors are working as hot-wire anemometers. Our simulations suggest that this design variant results in higher sensitivity. We have also carried out optimization studies to identify the best location for the heaters and sensors. A prototype of this device has been fabricated based on MEMS techniques, and an external pump is used to produce an oscillating gas flow within the device.

<div> <p>Ice losses from the Greenland Ice Sheet have been increasing in the last two decades, leading to a larger contribution to the global sea level rise. Roughly 40% of the contribution comes from ice-sheet dynamics, mainly regulated by basal sliding. The sliding component of glaciers has been observed to be strongly related to surface melting, as water can eventually reach the bed and impact the subglacial water pressure, affecting the basal sliding.  </p> </div><div> <p>The link between ice velocities and surface melt on multi-annual time scale is still not totally understood even though it is of major importance with expected increasing surface melting. Several studies showed some correlation between an increase in surface melt and a slowdown in velocities, but there is no consensus on those trends. Moreover those investigations only presented results in a limited area over Southwest Greenland.  </p> </div><div> <p>Here we present the ice motion over many land-terminating glaciers on the Greenland Ice Sheet for the period 2000 - 2020. This type of glacier is ideal for studying processes at the interface between the bed and the ice since they are exempted from interactions with the sea while still being relevant for all glaciers since they share the same basal friction laws. The velocity data was obtained using optical Landsat 7 & 8 imagery and feature-tracking algorithm. We attached importance keeping the starting date of our image pairs similar, and avoided stacking pairs starting before and after melt seasons, resulting in multiple velocity products for each year.  </p> </div><div> <p>Our results show similar velocity trends for previously studied areas with a slowdown until 2012 followed by an acceleration. This trend however does not seem to be observed on the whole ice sheet and is probably specific to this region’s climate forcing. </p> </div><div> <p>Moreover comparison between ice velocities from different parts of Greenland allows us to observe the impact of different climatic trends on ice dynamics.</p> </div>

<p>The polar regions exhibit some of the most visible signs of climate change globally; annual mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has quadrupled in recent decades, from 51 ± 65 Gt yr<sup>−1</sup> (1992-2001) to 211 ± 37 Gt yr<sup>−1</sup> (2002-2011). This can partly be attributed to the widespread retreat and speed-up of marine-terminating glaciers. The Zachariae Isstrøm (ZI) is an outlet glacier of the Northeast Greenland Ice Steam (NEGIS), one of the largest ice streams of the GrIS (700km), draining approximately 12% of the ice sheet interior. Observations show that the ZI began accelerating in 2000, resulting in the collapse of the floating ice shelf between 2002 and 2003. By 2014, the ice shelf extended over an area of 52km<sup>2</sup>, a 95% decrease in area since 2002, where it extended over 1040km<sup>2</sup>. Paleo-reconstructions provide an opportunity to extend observational records in order to understand the oceanic and climatic processes governing the position of the grounding zone of marine terminating glaciers and the extent of floating ice shelves. Such datasets are thus necessary if we are to constrain the impact of future climate change projections on the Arctic cryosphere.</p><p>A multi-proxy approach, involving grain size, geochemical, foraminiferal and sedimentary analysis was applied to marine sediment core DA17-NG-ST8-92G, collected offshore of the ZI, on  the Northeast Greenland Shelf. The aim was to reconstruct changes in the extent of the ZI and the palaeoceanographic conditions throughout the Early to Mid Holocene (c.a. 12,500-5,000 cal. yrs. BP). Evidence from the analysis of these datasets indicates that whilst there has been no grounded ice at the site over the last 12,500 years, the ice shelf of the ZI extended as a floating ice shelf over the site between 12,500 and 9,200 cal. yrs. BP, with the grounding line further inland from our study site. This was followed by a retreat in the ice shelf extent during the Holocene Thermal Maximum; this was likely to have been governed, in part, by basal melting driven by Atlantic Water (AW) recirculated from Svalbard or from the Arctic Ocean. Evidence from benthic foraminifera suggest that there was a shift from the dominance of AW to Polar Water at around 7,500 cal. yrs. BP, although the ice shelf did not expand again despite of this cooling of subsurface waters.</p>
