Monohull Dynamics During Heavy Lift

The dynamics of offshore heavy lift remains complex due to the interaction between the monohull construction vessel and the lifting object under the challenging environmental loads. This system becomes even more difficult to judge by common sense as the lifting weight offshore is usually above the motion reference point (the center of flotation of vessel), which makes the coupled system more unstable than the vessel without the lifting weight. This study proposes an analytical formula using the double pendulum, based on the Euler-Lagrangian equations, to explore the insight of the heavy lift dynamics. The effect of initial lifting condition is investigated to explain different possible outcomes for lifting similar weights. A range of vessel stiffness (GM), lifting heights and weights are considered in the parametric study for a better understanding of the coupled dynamic behaviour. While such analytical model is convenient for the understanding of the system mechanism, it is difficult to capture the effect from the wave loading. Therefore numerical models are used for this purpose. A comparison between the analytical model and the numerical model, performed in the frequency domain, evaluates the quality of ship motion response analysis performed by the numerical model. Results of these works will be useful in development of offshore crane curves for heavy lift offshore. Apart from the theoretical formulation, several real time ship instrumentation records including the ship motion and the crane hook load have been collected and investigated in this paper. The offshore instrumentation records provide a valuable benchmark to calibrate the numerical model or to accumulate “experience” for future projects. Challenges in such process are depicted and possible solutions are discussed. To make the comparison a fair “apple to apple”, the major difficulty arises from the “unknown” environment itself, where wave is not always measured and operation relies heavily on weather forecast and “experience”. There are also limitations in offshore measurement itself. Possibility of using the ship motion as the indicator is explored for decision making (to lift or not to lift). The paper develops a practical approach for obtaining reasonable numerical results in the engineering office and investigates scientifically sound interpretation of the ship motion time history onboard towards a safe offshore heavy lift.

Over the last decades, the aquaculture sector increased significantly and constantly, moving fish-farm plants further from the coast, and exposing them to increasingly high forces due to currents and waves. The performances of cages in currents and waves have been widely studied in literature, by means of laboratory experiments and numerical models, but virtually all the research is focused on the global performances of the system, i.e., on the maximum displacement, the volume reduction or the mooring tension. In this work we propose a numerical model, derived from the net-truss model of Kristiansen and Faltinsen (2012), to study the dynamics of fish farm cages in current and waves. In this model the net is modeled with straight trusses connecting nodes, where the mass of the net is concentrated at the nodes. The deformation of the net is evaluated solving the equation of motion of the nodes, subjected to gravity, buoyancy, lift, and drag forces. With respect to the original model, the elasticity of the net is included. In this work the real size of the net is used for the computation mesh grid, this allowing the numerical model to reproduce the exact dynamics of the cage. The numerical model is used to simulate a cage with fixed rings, based on the concept of mooring the cage to the foundation of no longer functioning offshore structures. The deformations of the system subjected to currents and waves are studied.

This work provides a feasibility and effectiveness analysis, through numerical investigation, of metal replacement of primary components with composite material for an executive aircraft wing. In particular, benefits and disadvantages of replacing metal, usually adopted to manufacture this structural component, with composite material are explored. To accomplish this task, a detailed FEM numerical model of the composite aircraft wing was deployed by taking into account process constraints related to Liquid Resin Infusion, which was selected as the preferred manufacturing technique to fabricate the wing. We obtained a geometric and material layup definition for the CFRP components of the wing, which demonstrated that the replacement of the metal elements with composite materials did not affect the structural performance and can guarantee a substantial advantage for the structure in terms of weight reduction when compared to the equivalent metallic configuration, even for existing executive wing configurations.

This paper uses both numerical simulation method and experimental research method to study on welding residual stress of high-strength steel of the cone-cylinder hull. Welding is often accompanied by a larger welding residual stress, which directly affects the safety and service life of the hull structure. In order to obtain the distribution of the welding residual stress, the welding procedure was developed by its parameter language by using FE analysis software in this paper. Then the welding residual stress of hot spot region was measured through X-ray nondestructive testing method, and compared it with simulation results. Finally, considering the residual stress as the initial stress, this paper analyzed dynamic response process of the welding structure under combined actions of the welding residual stress and multiaxial loads, which could more accurately determine the stress of welding structure and the location of fatigue risk point. According to the amplitude of damage parameters and strain time-history curve, we can estimate the fatigue life of structure by selecting the corresponding damage models.

Our research team developed a brace type and an angle brace type of the visco-elastic damper on seismic-response controlled structure for timber structure. We performed various dependence evaluations by the materials examination of the styrene olefin-based visco-elastic body which we developed newly. We made a structural model using the performance that loading tests in timber frame. We inspected the validity of the structural model. In addition, we built a technical support system for damper setting by the time history response analysis so that a general design architect was easy to use the damper. We could express dynamics properties of visco-elastic body properties by Voigt model, and the structural model almost accorded with an examination property value. We made a structural model of the whole frame system by Kb of installation rigidity obtained from loading tests in timber frame. Because a design level almost accorded with experimental value, the validity of the frame design on seismic-response controlled structure in consideration of the dependence (distortion, frequency, temperature) of the visco-elastic body was confirmed. This visco-elastic damper on seismic-response controlled structure acquired minister authorization of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In addition, this damper acquired the certification of the Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association.

<p>Estimation of evaporation rates from soils is significant for environmental, hydrological, and agricultural purposes. Modeling of the soil surface resistance is essential to estimate the evaporation rates from bare soil. Empirical surface resistance models may cause large deviations when applied to different soils. A physically-based soil surface model is developed to calculate the surface resistance, which can consider evaporation on the soil surface when soil is fully saturated and the vapor flow below the soil surface after dry layer forming on the top. Furthermore, this physically-based expression of the surface resistance is added into a numerical model that considers the liquid water transport, water vapor transport, and heat transport during evaporation. The simulation results are in good agreement with the results from six soil column drying experiments.  This numerical model can be applied to predict or estimate the evaporation rate of different soil and saturation at different depths during evaporation.</p>

A statistical study has been done to investigate (i) the variation of spectral responses of structures due to artificially generated earthquake records with identical statistical properties, (ii) the effect of duration of strong shaking phase of artificial earthquakes on the response of structures, and (iii) the number of earthquake records needed for time-history response analysis of a structure in a seismic region. The results indicate that the flexible structures are more sensitive to the inherent statistical variations among statistically identical earthquake records. Consequently several records must be used for time-history response analysis. A sample of eight or more records appear to provide a good estimate of mean maximum response. The duration of strong shaking can significantly affect the maximum response. Based on the results, it is suggested that for the purpose of estimating peak response, the strong shaking duration of the input earthquake motion should be at least four times the natural period of the structure. The maximum responses due to statistically identical ground motion records are observed to fit approximately the type 1 extreme value distribution. Thus, it is rationally possible to choose a design value based on the mean, standard deviation of the spectral response values and tolerable probability of exceedance.

The solar energy converter in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system, applies the solid frame structure of the ceramic foams to receive the concentrated solar radiation, convert it into thermal energy, and heat the air flow through the ceramic foams by convection heat transfer. In this paper, first, the pressure drops in the studied ceramic foams were measured under all kinds of flow condition. Based on the experimental results, an empirical numerical model was built for the air flow through ceramic foams. Second, a 3-D numerical model was built, for the receiving and conversion of the solar energy in the ceramic foams of the solar energy converter. Third, applying two aforementioned numerical models, the numerical studies of the thermal performance were carried out, for the solar energy converter filled with the ceramic foams, and results show that the structure parameters of the ceramic foams, the effective reflective area and the solar radiation intensity of the solar concentrator, have direct impacts on the absorptivity and conversion efficiency of the solar energy in the solar energy converter. And the results of the numerical studies are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements. This paper will provide a reference for the design and manufacture of the solar energy converter with the ceramic foams.
